Intent matters, and there are a lot of people who would say the exact words that the AI said, not with the intention to provoke thought but with the intention to normalize hate. A temporary ban while there is ambiguity about the intent is not unreasonable. But Twitch should be criticized if it persists in the ban after it discovers, as it should have by now, that it was not the intention of this channel's creators, a…
> say the exact words that the AI said, not with the intention to provoke thought but with the intention to normalize hate The "but nobody is laughing" part would run counter to this. The premise of the whole joke is that the referenced jokes aren't funny.

#522It’s kind of funny how whenever an account on a privately-operated website gets banned for violating that website’s clearly stated rules, it instantly becomes a referendum on Cancel Culture and Lowest Common Denominator and Woke Mob etc. People are forming entire worldviews around being oppressed by The Mods these days, and so many people happily clamor to reinforce their position that they are The Victim Of Culture…
I agree. I’ve literally seen the word “mob,” like, 5 times in this thread already. I think… it’s just an overzealous application of a policy? I don’t really think there’s a woke gang on this one.

#523So comedy cannot be offensive anymore? When did that happen?
I don't see any comedians getting arrested lately (for their comedy, that is).

Agreed, as a society we need to increase our resilience to opinions we may find uncomfortable.
We've totally abandoned the concept of "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."
Eg. suggesting oppressed group struggling with validating their own existence and massive suicide rates coming from that struggle to entertain a though that validy is not there may not be what an educated mind would do.

Attitudes like this are why people will listen to the TERFs instead, as they're always willing to talk about trans-identifying males are eradicating female-only spaces, and so on.
Well ofcourse. One just wants to live their life while other is activist promothing their case.

I'm not going to engage in charged political discussion with you as this is simply not the place for it—HN is a website of curious discussion, and that does not seem to be what you are seeking here in this exchange. I can't speak for everyone but I think many people generally find it uncouth to make blanket political statements like the ones you've made here, on this website, especially when none of it directly had a…
I merely continued the discussion from this context:
> sometimes you can't have nice things because there are people who will abuse them.
> there are actual Nazis out there who want to put people in ovens, so it's taboo to make jokes about how they may have a point.
> similar thing with trans people, you mention them and trolls come out of the woodwork saying they should kill themselves.
The fact that you keep claiming that my responses do not relate to the matter at hand indicate that you are willfully ignoring context whenever it suites you. You have repeatedly avoided actual discussion of the matter at hand, the position I put forth, and instead relied on sly attempts to dismiss everything I said.
Your behaviour is not appropriate for a website that values arguing for claims.
---
As for this website for "curious" discussion is not a website where paraphrasing Popper of all people and mentioning the statements of a political leader in the same comment gets you flagged.
You keep deflecting from the subject at hand, and never actually engaging with it... So much for "discussion".
Quite pathetic if you ask me.

My stand with most (not all) things like this is that intent matters; there are a lot of things (especially with jokes/comedy) where nuance and discernment are key. I disagree with your draconian approach (but I understand where it’s coming from) because I do not think that issues like these should be just swept under the rug.
> intent matters Ironically, machines autogenerating Seinfeld-like scripts literally cannot have intent. We can go a step back to the intent of the creators of the system. I assume the creators did not intend to auto-generate distasteful and/or bigoted jokes. But it's Seinfeld-like. And it seems if it's supposed to generate bad jokes eventually it'll make some mean jokes. It's something of an interesting thought expe…
We treat negligence differently from malice in both criminal and civil contexts, and even within negligence there are gradations about whether or not a reasonable person would have foreseen the outcome.
I think LLMs slot into that model just fine.

#529Uncharacteristically off-topic comment from me, I guess, but when do humans get to a point where we no longer have to appeal to the lowest common denominator? How are our relationships supposed to improve if we dub anything that makes us uncomfortable as "taboo" and steer clear of it? I get that on the Internet there is a lot of anonymity (though less than there used to be) that folks tend to abuse, but at the same t…
Is this....a weird way to say that you want folks to have the ability to (checks notes) make transphobic comments and prevent other people from reacting? > but when do humans get to a point where we no longer have to appeal to the lowest common denominator? How is making transphobic remarks appealing to the opposite of the LCD of society. It appears that you are claiming some sort of social or moral superiority....to…

If you can't actually use GPT to build even slightly autonomous systems then a lot of the potential value is lost.
small degree of supervision is the same thing as saying "highly autonomous", just not fully autonomous. "can't do systems with even a slight degree of autonomy" is a complete inversion of the statement here lol. it's like saying it's not even worth having junior coders or underling copywriters because you have to proof-read their output. Sure but that's still a huge force multiplier. IDEs don't generate correct outpu…
A highly autonomous LLM used to generate code can be used as a productivity enhancer by software developers. A fully autonomous one could be used to eliminate software developers entirely.
A fully autonomous LLM lets me send out daily personalized marketing emails to every user who signs up for my service. A highly autonomous one requires me to spend time reviewing, which limits how many emails I can send out, though it still boosts my productivity.
