this is a completely fair point, it may be the case that AI scraper bots have recently made the magnitude and/or details of unwanted bot traffic to public IP addresses much worse but yeah the issue is that as long as you have something accessible to the public, it's ultimately your responsibility to deal with malicious/aggressive traffic > At some point impacting my services with your business behavior goes from "it'…

> I think maybe the current AI scraper traffic patterns are actually what "the internet being the internet" is from here forward Kinda my point was that it's only the internet being the internet if we tolerate it. If enough people give a crap, the corporations doing it will have to knock it off.

i appreciate the sentiment but no amount of people giving a crap will ever impact the stuff we're talking about here, because the stuff we're talking about here is in no way governed or influenced by popular opinion or anything even remotely adjacent to popular opinion

if you wanna rage against the machine then more power to you but this line of thinking is dead on arrival in terms of outcome

So, it is my responsibility to prevent my neighbors from buying a high-end gaming PC for every member of their family, an induction stove, central A/C, and an electric car because my local power company might not be able to provide the contracted service. Right. The rest of your examples are just as poor as this one.

You seem to have confused "being responsible for" and "being affected by". I am affected by the effects that the geography of the region I live in has on the local weather. I am not responsible for that geography.

If your shallow (and dismissive) comments along these lines weren't so, well, shallow and dismissive, I might be inclined to put a little more effort into it. But they're not, so I didn't. By all means, congratulate yourself for putting this bigoted "culture warrior" in their (obviously) well deserved corner of shame. I'm not exactly sure how decrying bigotry while pointing out that demanding language unrelated to su…

You could make that assumption, but you'd be wrong. I haven't flagged any of your comments.

I suppose I could flag this one as complaining about downvotes/flags does violate HN guidelines.

But I won't. Especially as "flagging" comments or submissions should be limited to spammy and/or low-quality entries. I disagree with your comments being flagged (or even downvoted, for that matter), as that stifles discussion. And more's the pity.

Edit: Unfortunately, it's too late for me to "vouch" for your comments. But I would if I could.

This seems like a plot to redirect residential Chinese traffic through VPNs, which are supposedly mostly operated by only a few entities with a stomach for dishonest maneuvering and surveillance.

Maybe they mean well. You'd have to understand their total security posture.

I don't much care about the flagging either way; it's more I only noticed you replied when I saw my top level comment in this old discussion had changed state (HN makes it hard to follow old discussion threads, I don't have any custom tooling to highlight replies, just a habit of mostly circling back every few days).

> I suppose I could flag this one as complaining about downvotes/flags does violate HN guidelines.

You'd be hard pressed to justify on those claimed grounds; noticing a comment has been flagged is _not_ equivalent to complaining about a comment being flagged .. after more than ten years here it amuses me more than anything.

Again, you've sidestepped any comment with substance re: the original question of bigotry which you posed and I've addressed ..

If you'd like to address that or ask any more actual questions (rather than intuitive leaps of essentially incorrect judgement) I'm open to continuing here (tomorrow or the next day).

From your example (and many others), AI companies are engaging in DDoS too, so why wouldn't law enforcement target them too ?

As a first and very pessimistic guess, the pages getting DoSed are maintained by people or groups with pretty minimal resources. That means time or money available for lawyers isn't there, and the monetary impact per website is small enough that LE may not care. Also, they might share the common viewpoint of "it's the internet; suck it up."

Wikipedia seems like they might check all the boxes here, have they done anything ?
