My handwriting sucks too, and much of it is nearly illegible, but I find that I have much better retention if I keep written notes rather than typing. My wife's version of a shopping list is a bunch of lines of "running writing Ws". The typed approximation being Wwwwwwwww Wwwwwwwww ...etc At the shops, I have no idea but she knows what she wrote.
