I just pay for YT Premium. I’m genuinely curious why that option is so controversial? Happy to get people’s thoughts. So I never see any ads and I feel like I get enough value for what I pay. It even helps me skip in-content ads with a single click.

Ragebait comment for sure, but not everyone lives in some bubble where $14/months is spare change and anyway the fact that even a philosophical wall of text on why paying for something so fundamental like not getting spammed with retarded unksippable ads on a 20 second video, (or even worse getting one in the middle of a concerto movement) would not convince, makes further engagement unworthy. It's pretty appalling to note that not a single comment so far brought up the affordability issue.

YT Premium is my favorite monthly subscription - probably the highest value software that I pay for.

Least delusional HN user/bot.

YouTube does not respect its users, their preferences, or improving their platform. If it did, their website would function a lot like SmartTube, made by a solo dev. Instead, they're on a slow march of enshittification with shorts in every nook and cranny. Even just recently they made changes to the subscriptions page so it wasn't chronological for some users.

I use on my Android TV SmartTube, you can customize pretty much anything, I don't think I have ever tried original Youtube app, but just out of curiosity I tried competition - TizenTube, which is basically default Youtube app minus ads and it was absolutely horrible experience, on home page you see like 2 giant thumbnails and that's it, can't understand how can someone stand such UI, the most basic settings are setting how big are the thumbnails, how fast is the video title scrolling, if your app doesn't have this I am not gonna use it.

Why are people even so dumb to use TV apps for a fucking TV? Just connect a "computer" to the TV and play YouTube with a mouse and KB and with Brave and Sponsor Block. If they ban adblockers and Sponsor Block there will be AI solutions that let you cut the ads out in the future. Nobody should use shitty TV apps. It's like more convenient and practical to have some kind of PC like device attached to the TV for 100 oth…

Why would you use it so complicated way when you can just use SmartTube (or TizenTube) on Android TV, both controlled conveniently with your TV remote instead of some mouse, cables, etc.

I happily pay for YTP, but the monthly cost is actually getting a tad rich for me, and I'm honestly considering just not using yt any more.

The terrible UX, the constant pushing of shorts, the baked in shilling, even from my favourite creators, the absolute abortion that is yt music and their attempt to merge my music listening profile and my video watching profile (I don't want fucking music videos in my video feed ffs).

There are some creators that I really like, but I won't die without their content. Maybe I need to go to something like Floatplane or whatever, pay for the content I actually consume and start pirating music again.

Has anyone ever actually purchased anything because you saw an ad for it?

The problem is, you don't realise that you did. One day you'll need to buy something outside your sphere of knowledge; a washing machine, drain cleaner, car tyres, whatever. The seeds of biased selection have already been implanted by years of conditioning.

So that's the value proposition for companies paying for ads?

"Keep spamming everyone for years and one day someone might make one purchase for one of your products"?

Earlier quoted context omitted.

Privacy rights. Google’s ad surveillance eventually feeds ICE and its ilk, so I’ll not willingly reward this behavior.

How much do you use Google services on your daily life (Google search, Gmail, Google pay..)? You might have unaware handed more your personal info them than you know

Zero. Email & calendars replaced with totally separate paid provider that doesn’t run ads at all. Search through Kagi. No domains or hosting. No docs/presentations, and only use meet when forced to.
