I know language evolves over time, but I can’t help but be irritated when people refer to anything non-computerized as analog. If it isn’t representing something with a continuously various signal then it ain’t analog!

From the Oxford English Dictionary:

4. Designating the original or traditional form of something that has a digital or computer-mediated counterpart.

5. colloquial (chiefly humorous). Esp. of a person: unaware of or unaffected by computer technology or digital communications; outdated, old-fashioned.

This seems ubiquitous (in baby steps) in my social circles. I would disagree that people aren't willing or able to care about it. Most folks I know care deeply, but aren't technical enough or capable enough to do much about.

Remember: most people aren't STEM and don't have the money or skillsets to just decide to, as a New Years Resolution, to de-google. A Ring doorbell cam is a non-trivial home upgrade, etc.

Why have I been seeing people use "enshitification" so much lately? Yes I know where it comes from and what it means. It's like Cory Doctorow is the new Noam Chomsky of IT and enshitification has replaced "manufactured consent".

Because it's such a great word! It names something we have all begun to see but didn't have a name for.

karl marx saw this in the 1800s; modern media just eliminated any discussion of these concepts

Cute, but the industry has vastly outpaced humans at gaming and abusing the brain’s chemistry. You’ve Been Played is a good book, as is anything by Jaron Lanier.

For the majority, there is no healthy relationship with ‘technology’ — in the smartphone and modern web sense — until technology stops trying to make them into addicts.
