Maybe a reverse of this (well, that's not quite right). I have had recurring dreams in the past of being in an enclosed space like in a mall or in the halls of a large college building where I can find no exit—just endless rooms, halls, etc. In the dreams it's kind of threatening but also kind of exciting: the endless possibilities. How I imagine Hong Kong, also, BTE. I've never been but would love to go there. Oh, a…

Aw man “exploring interior spaces” is one of my favorite dream genres.

Have you ever played the bizarro dungeon RPG "Kowloon's Gate"? Navigating through that madness might be right up your alley.

I'll check it out. Thank you.

From what I understand the tetris effect is not caused by the video game itself, but by playing it for an inordinate amount of time. The "tetris effect" has been there way before tetris, any monotonous activity done for an excessive amount of time will cause a tetris effect (i think a lot of people are familiar with hypnagogic hallucinations while falling asleep after driving all day, for example).

Sure, factory work can be the same.

The Charlie Chaplin film Modern Times has a hilarious example.

That might just have been the infinite Ikea from SCP-3008[0] or the City[1] from the Blame manga (includes rooms suspiciously sized the same as Jupiter, stairs you need months to walk on to reach the top, indoor clouds and a common lack of railings).

Well, at least it is now starring in a recent Manga/Anime/film:

That’s where she happened across the case of a football player who reported strange distortions on the field.

“He started seeing health bars above the heads of the opposition players,” she says.

“Another player heard voiceovers while dodging tackles or chasing opponents.”

Okay but I wanna know if these health bars bore any relationship to reality, and were they conveying information otherwise unavailable? Like if a player was dealing with a hangover but looked okay, did their health bar show it? Was that voiceover telling the player what to do before it happened?

There are lots of other non-videogame related versions of this too! The one I'm probably most familiar with is Parkour Vision, where practicing parkour enough leads you to view the environment completely differently, seeing a kash vault here, a kong to precision there. It's quite enjoyable! I imagine skaters have a similar thing. From the little bit of skating that I did I mainly just got to appreciating smooth areas…

Also now just reminded of the time my friends and I brought a chess board with us interrailing and we played so much that anytime I'd be drifting off or close my eyes I'd just see random board configurations.

Just another click bait title.

The game doesn't affect reality, it affects the user's _perception_ of reality.

Understanding the difference means a major change for some people: accepting that what's inside your head is not "reality".

The failure to understand and accept this difference between reality and make believe (make believe is only in your mind) is the root of many millennial problems...
