“Any update on this” should just subscribe you to the issue without actually leaving the comment
My main reason is to signal "there are still people out there in need of this". My addition always is "What can I do to help move this forward?" (unless that is made clear in the thread already, ofc). To signal that my need is urgent enough for me to put time, effort or funding into it.

I frequently get comments like this in projects they I maintain, sometimes less than a day after the issue was opened, and it does nothing but annoy me and make me not want to resolve their issue. I agree that it's unnecessary and annoying, but it's not always useless. Some maintainers sometimes work on issues for months on end without posting any updates because they'd rather focus on the work itself, and "any updates?" comments may prompt them to talk about the progress so far. Ideally contributors would be able to opt into automatically blocking some kinds of comments, but of course that would require a per…

NATO forces directly engaging with Russia troops, whether they’re in the Ukraine or elsewhere, would dramatically escalate the war. Right now, it seems NATO strategy is severe financial sanctions while providing arms to Ukrainian forces.
Crazy as things are going I am expecting Russia to declare that as kind of allied declaration against them.
Having Cold War situations again isn't desirable of course but it's kind of battle tested to not lead to further, direct, escalations.

It can be annoying, but it can also be someone trying to reach out asking if you'd like any help. Maybe it'd be better if they phrased it as "Is there anything I can do to help progress this issue/pr?"

You shouldn't read your employer's actions as uncaring. Ultimately it depends on where they are getting their money from. If that dries up, then there is no team anyway. I completely see your point, but I also see the difficulty your employer has. They can't just wait for the war to finish before getting their business going again.
