Well thankfully Apple charges so much for 512gb SSD that it isn't actually cheaper to buy the Macbook Air.

ThnikPads have propably the best keyboards around, definitly the best laptop keyboards I ever used.

You either have never tried a ThinkPad prior to the W530 (i.e. more than 10 years ago, when they significantly changed the keyboard for the first time) or you haven't used one of the "next-gen" models with "next-gen" keyboards that they have been building ever since and that get worse with every iteration.

It only takes maximum of 24GB RAM. Right now I'm ok with it but I'd like to have some future proofing at some point, everybody is going crazy with containers nowadays. I've been moving my work off the desktop and while I can upgrade NVMe as I please I'm stuck with memory limit.

I also have 64GB on my work T480 (non-s) despite "max" being 32GB.

The Lenovo-reported max RAM specs often do not take into account newer larger memory modules released after the laptop (or at least I believe this is the reason for the discrepancy).

I have used as far back as 15 years ago, have a back up one that is 5 years old (?), privately a X1 Extreme Gen 2 and a company L13. No significant difference in keyboards, all of those are, or were, great. Especially compared to HP or Dell. Not to speak about Asus...

ARM has had trust zone for years now.

Pluton is separate from TZ.

Pluton is another core which is a security module---in this case, a Microsoft product. TZ splits data and instruction access into insecure and secure classes on the original core---letting a little information pass from one side to the other without revealing the inner functionality.

There are plenty of Arm SoCs with Cortex-A cores plus an onboard Cortex-M-based trusted platform module (TPM). There are also already Arm chips using Pluton, such as the MediaTek MT3620.

would linux support be better this time around with ARM considering we have had years of raspberry pi and similar devices support?

i would love to know if linux can shine on arm for desktop use out of the box

I think it's not only about arm vs x86. I have a work provided Thinkpad and work provided Macbook Pro (with Skylake CPU) and I prefer to work on the Macbook for the same reason. Apple also sets up very different fan curves from most of the PC industry. They won't turn on the fan until it hits 95 C. This keeps it quiet but it affects performance and maybe longevity.
