Not exactly, it's a service with unpredictable output. This isn't like a knife where you know what will happen depending on how you use it.

Chatting with random people on the internet is much more unpredictable. Try writing on 4chan that you are depressed and gasp in horror how horrible humans can be when anonymous.

Okay maybe it is indeed very predictable what would happen on 4chan, but I hope you get my point.

Here the AI is just a tool, we shouldn't categorize them as some "special" software.

if you build something massively successful (with recurring revenue), you should be able to switch to one of the similar open-source models and even host it yourself. GPT-Neo and GPT-J may not be as large as GPT-3, but I think GPT-Jurassic rivals it (I'm not sure if the jurassic model is released to the public, maybe someone else with more knowledge can comment)

You’re not wrong. It’s intentionally deceptive and exploitation of open source culture by naming it this way.

Freaking platform risk!! I lost 8 months of my life on 2 projects. One was using robinhood's unofficial API and the other one was Discord's. So now my whole goal is to built stuff from the ground up.

What if it is not artificial and only human level ai in a sense that it's run by mechanical Turks which answer the prompts ?

It is most definitely not mechanical Turks. I played with it for a while.

If you ask in certain boards and make an effort to write your post detailing what’s going on, you will only receive helpful responses.

I know about gpt-j, can you name worthy clones/alternatives?

According to their website, GPT-J is only comparable to the shrunk-down, 6B-parameter GPT-3.

Don't build serious stuff on other people's API if it's a single point of failure. If you can afford to throw it away easily, then it's fine for fun experiments.

They could probably build a competitor even if you had your own model running.
