Exactly. Despite what media wants people to believe, may are sick and tired of political correctness and bending down to everyone's demands for anything. And Trump caught on to that and just throws vague remarks here and there in that direction. And desperate voters say "fuck it, he might just be crazy enough to not go back to the same line all the other presidents come back to after they are elected". Same with Sand…

>Despite what media wants people to believe, may are sick and tired of political correctness and bending down to everyone's demands for anything. If you are an average straight white man, yeah, it sure looks like things aren't getting better. Your wages haven't increased much at all (adjusted for inflation) since the '70s. And yeah, women and the gays and men who aren't white (though, I think it's mostly women; there…

The issue is,you cant call rape a rape anymore, unless its drunk man having a sex with an equally drunk woman - then its PATRIARCHAL RAPE

You cant even have a hard discussion without gagging one side. Its wrong.

While republicans are pretty much cancer, the left seems growing incapable of dealing with reality, because it might offend someone

You forgot the part where it's used to harass and chase people you might consider to be 'fascists'. Where it's justified for the Gulag ;-) But if you want to keep thinking it's about respect and not abused by people, sure, that's pretty noble.

As far as I know, the political correctness police don't actually send anyone to forced labor camps, because, of course, no such thing exists. As for being harassed or chased, again, it seems like, if there's any merit to that accusation of harassment or "chasing," the beleaguered not-politically-correct victims of that could, you know, call the cops or file a restraining order or whatever. Those are actual real-worl…

Yeah no forced labor/torture camps exist today. And people aren't put in them for their unpopular views such as atheism or satire.

And if a person wants to state something crude and obviously insensitive and get sent to a forced labour camp, it's their own God damn fault for being insensitive to the dear leader(s)

You don't get sent to a forced labour camp in civilised countries. You get ostracised, to be fair they probably deserved to be silenced because they are bigots.

Political correctness, as far as I've been able to tell, boils down in most cases to: be respectful in how you treat people, because the ubiquitous disrespect shown to women/minorities/gays/whoever is no longer considered appropriate or praiseworthy. I don't think I've ever heard someone complain about political correctness run amok, and had it turn out that they weren't just complaining--in careful language, mind--a…

Euphemism treadmill, ridiculous proliferation of personal pronouns, victim veto, persistent assault on works like The Mikado or Dante's Inferno. Anchor babies are a thing, Chinese pay 80K for exactly what the term implies, feds shut down places being used for birth tourism, but being true's not a defense when the goal's not offending. Careful language, what could be wrong with that? Well what's the opportunity cost, what's the upper limit on the cognitive burden on that? Relatively easy for people with college degrees and lots of time, great way to signal social superiority by being able to waste fucktons of time on intricate, piddling shit, just like aristocrats used to do with clothing and politeness rules. No cost to being polite, except for all those plays I guess you can't show anymore. Let's throw a fit about a kid wearing a fucking kimono, what's that, Japanese people don't even care? That's not important to me, this is the USA and I've got to show how not racist I am by calling other people racist. Oh shit, the little girl wearing the kimono is biracial and has a Japanese mom, well she looked white so when I started that shitstorm of hate against the family on Facebook and Twitter, at least I was raising awareness about cultural appropriation. She was white-looking anyway so she has white privilege. Cool story, political correctness isn't real.

This is the core paragraph of this article:

The best news about Trump is that he is wreaking
this havoc on the status quo while having no chance
    of ascending to the presidency.
You can’t win the Electoral College in 2016 by driving away women,
Hispanics, blacks, and Asian-Americans, no matter how
large the margins you pile up in deep-red states.
This whole clown show lets people express their dissatisfaction with the status quo, yet the risk of the US going full retard politically is pretty slim.

I'm the sort of person who thinks Nixon was a better president than JFK. The Republicans could field a decent president if they 1. recognized what a spectacular embarrassment and failure GWB was, and that we're not going to elect anyone who is remotely connected to him, and 2. quit letting the crazy wing of their party run things. I mean, there are crazies on both sides, but when it comes time to elect a president, you pick a centrist you think might be acceptable to the other side, too.

But that aside, yeah, I just don't see how asking you to use one word instead of another to describe a person or a group makes you gagged or incapable of dealing with reality.

There is nothing bullying in the parent poster's comment.

I don't know about bullying... maybe? I certainly was ridiculing the viewpoint that political correctness has gone overboard.

I personally think ridicule is the right response to that sort of complaint.

My intent was to ridicule the idea, though, not the previous poster. Especially considering how the previous poster framed it as "some people think..." which is a less personal, and I think better way of arguing. I think my personal anecdotes (for example, where I mentioned that I work in an industry where I get a large advantage for being white and male) are a weakness of my debate style; they tend to make debates more personal, more emotional and, in my opinion, less interesting.

I would argue that ridicule is different from bullying, especially when that ridicule is directed at an idea rather than at a person.

But... I could also see how you could make the argument that ridiculing an idea is ridiculing the people who hold that idea. And ridiculing a person is certainly a component of bullying. So maybe it was bullying? But I also think of Bullying as a pattern of abuse directed towards a particular person, and I'm certainly not doing that

I do have plenty of friends who are openly racist and/or sexist, and while I do ridicule their ideas (and yes, to their faces, I'm not afraid to call people out.) they're still friends, so make of that what you will.

Here's an example of the "political correct police" - Twitter shaming. Somebody says something satirical and they are assigned a "label". This was the case with Justine Sacco. Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock refuse to perform at universities, citing that the students there "can't take a joke due to political correctness". There isn't a regulating force in the USA for being PC; however, there are social ramifications that lead to real life consequences.

“Now, there's one thing you might have noticed I don't complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality. They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American business…

Wow. Really loved that. Pretty insightful...maybe we should elect this guy

The idea that all minorities hate him probably sits well with your wishes and that of the author of the article but it's not necessarily true.
