Yeah I was thinking airtightness might be the difference. My flat seems to be bizarrely hermetic (when you turn on the kitchen extractor fan, it struggles if you don't have a window open somewhere).

So maybe a few leaky cracks are enough that when you open a window you get a bit of a through-draft.

As a middle ground I can also recommend this unit: https://apolloautomation.com/products/air-1 Looks like it's increased in price unfortunately but I like the idea, it's basically just what you would do as a DIY project but ready built. So you can either use it like a normal commercial product, or you can just fork the ESPHome config that's on GitHub and flash it exactly like any normal ESPHome project.

It's a extremely cool that ESPHome is able, just by existing and being good, to create this little industry of no-bullshit products. What an awesome project that is!

And let's not forget unscrupulous building owners/renters who will not employ the at least 10% fresh air intake rule on their HVAC system. This fresh air is outside air temperature, so their system has to change it's temp according to the thermostat setting, which costs money.

Fresh air doesn't have to be outside temperatures as you can heat exchange most of the energy from exhaust to intake without putting in additional power.

Uh, no, homes should not be airtight. You'd have a hard time closing exterior doors if they were, and anyways, houses need to be able to "breathe" to be able to keep humidity down (you don't want mold problems), oxygen up, CO2 down, etc.

My experience is more like being slightly drunk. If you know you need to be sharp (client meeting in a meeting room with shitty air), of course you can do it.

But when you have a relaxed team meeting in the same room, the jokes start getting really bad _really_ fast after the CO2 levels start going up.

Cars are leaky as fuck. They are more leaky than your house. There is 0 potential of CO2 buildup that is anything remotely close to being harmful.
