Bun isn't a node.js wrapper. It's an alternative to node.js that sits at roughly the same spot in the stack. Node.js is a distribution of the V8 JavaScript engine (the thing that executes JavaScript in the Chrome browser), along with a bunch of standard library code written mostly in C++. Bun is a distribution of the JavaScriptCore engine (the thing that executes JavaScript in the Safari browser), along with a bunch…

Answering “who is even using this software” is unfortunately missing in your answer. I am honestly curious. I’ve never seen it “in the wild” (in job descriptions, hearing from past colleagues, meetups etc). Only place I heard about it is HN and Twitter.

Maybe the people who "were overreacting" just happened to have more foresight than you and me? Perhaps they saw where this was heading, and that led to their "overreaction"?

In what way? Foresight about what? It was an experiment before, regardless of people's reaction at the time doesn't make it less of an experiment back then. I feel like I'm misunderstanding this entire conversation right now.

Why are you defending them so much, lol. It's no longer an underdog open source project fighting for survival, it's a freaking Anthropic subsidiary that has been bought for hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Nobody could have seen this coming…”? Well apparently a lot of people did. Maybe Jarred didn’t, maybe you didn’t, but most people correctly predicted what was coming.

See what coming?! I really don't understand what's going on here. Correctly predicted what, that Bun was being rewritten into Rust? I'm not sure anyone doubted that, all the work they did was public??? What on earth is going on here?

> What on earth is going on here? With the nearly complete PR with the port to rust, a number of people predicted that it was going to happen. They were assured it's unlikely to happen and then they were accused of overreacting over effectively nothing. When those same people who were already upset about the rewrite, learned that their predictions the same ones that were rudely dismissed, were in fact, correct, they…

>Correct or not, it's reasonable to conclude they were lied to. No it's not. If we were 9 days away from a human written version of this experiment then yeah it would be reasonable to conclude they were lied to, because a human written version would progress so much slower and steadier that it's very unlikely you hadn't made up most of your mind a week before merge time. But it's not human written. It's months, perha…

I might surprise you, but tech projects have social part of it. Decisions like that are discussed with community. It is completely fine to not give a single shit about community, but then don't act surprised when community doesn't give a shit about you.

I'm confused. Never heard of Bun until a few days ago here on HN. It's some nodejs wrapper thingy, written in Zig, and someone decided to use LLM to rewrite it in Rust. Is this a big deal? Who is even using this software? Why is this big?

>Is this a big deal? Who is even using this software? Why is this big?

Let's see. $10T in market cap, a significant chunk of everyone's assets and retirement funds, are currently dedicated to AI build out because of the potential for AI like Claude Code, which is recently doing $3b in revenue, and built completely on Bun.

If Bun is able to successfully vibe code a complete language shift in this short of time, it much more concretely validates the potential of vibe coding / AI for the entire industry.

It's really simple. 9 days ago this is how the migration was described: > I work on Bun and this is my branch > This whole thread is an overreaction. 302 comments about code that does not work. We haven’t committed to rewriting. There’s a very high chance all this code gets thrown out completely. > I’m curious to see what a working version of this looks, what it feels like, how it performs and if/how hard it’d be to…

Stop thinking about '9 days' like it means the same thing in an era where machines can generate thousands of lines of code in a few hours. There is no way a human rewrite like this wouldn't be roughly at the same stage with a 9 day delta. In that case, some of these accusations would be reasonable to make. But that is not the case here.

When announcements say that rewrite took 1 week, I wonder how much time went into preparing this file with very detailed instructions on mapping Zig to Rust idioms: https://github.com/oven-sh/bun/commit/46d3bc29f270fa881dd573... On top of that, if you look at 'Pointers & ownership' and 'Collections' sections, the Bun codebase is already prepared, using internal smart pointer types that map 1-to-1 to Rust equivalents,…

Yeah I don’t know what’s true when reading about LLMs. Same with comments here on hacker news. So much money on the line it’s clear they would seed communities with marketing shills (and some people are just tribal). Same since they own Bun, they have every incentive to make this seem easier than it was.

This is a huge problem regarding the specifics of ai. Tech is becoming very adversarial as a worker, since marketing and technical information are blurring lines more and more.

I’m honestly confused. What is it that you think makes these workers “more evil” than Google and Facebook workers from the early 2010s?

Google and Facebook workers just made a lot of cash and mostly made everyone's life harder by Leetcode and bad interview process, they didn't threaten and actively work to put millions of SE on the street.

> they didn't threaten and actively work to put millions of SE on the street

Programmers in the 90s weren't less evil or had a stronger moral compass. They simply didn't have the opportunity to reduce the need for their fellow developers on a massive scale. They (we) would have, had we had the chance.

They (we) did it to tons of other industries. And we collectively patted ourselves on the back, saying that automation is a good thing and we're the good guys for doing it and people who lost their jobs will adapt and maybe they should just learn to code.

Now it's happening to (some of) us and suddenly it's evil?

No. The point is: programmers are whores. We like to act all righteous on forums, but very very few of us care enough about the consequences of our code to do something about it.

We either don't think about it ("what could go wrong?"), don't care about it (eh), justify it ("I need to eat!!!", "I'm just following orders"), or actively embrace it ("It's the future!").

As an educational thread, see this one from a week ago where Jarred again deflects from a merge decision and legions of foot soldiers attack anyone who predicted the impending merge: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48073680 Didn't age well, did it?

It'll never cease to amaze me how many bootlickers are out of there that don't really care which boot to lick.

Decisions like this are discussed however the maintainers of the project wish to discuss them. And a majority of the time, these decisions are made and discussed solely by the maintainers, so I really have no idea what you're talking about.
