Sms? Signal and discord is more localized

But what about the actual content? People aren't scared of social media because you can message people, it's because of the short form videos. How are you supposed to have an offline version of that?

That's the point?

Social media is simply share x thing with either the world or a group of people or an individual.

The issue is when that is manipulated into you need to spend more time on them artificially.

Yeah yeah, virtue signaling, and most of EU online services are now gated by the use of one of the whatng cartel web engines (IRL, google blink), namely EU web sites are broken favoring web apps. They have to restore interop with noscript/basic html web engines (past/present/and future). Is ending endless scrolling really virtue signaling? Don't you think it will have a measurable effect?

It feels like some distraction to avoid to deal with the much more important (stategically) issue which is the interop of EU online services with 'small tech'.

BTW, with noscript/basic HTML, no infinite scroll anyway. One Rock Two Birds. Ironically.

Yeah yeah, whataboutism. I'm very happy they're taking a stance. I've seen too many messed up kids and there's no doubt the addictive design plays a big role in the problem.

It feels like they use such topic such as this one as a decoy to dodge to deal with the core and real EU online services interop issue.

EU online service must interop with web sites and not be _ONLY_ web apps which are hard dependent on the massive and ultra complex web engines of the whatng cartel (this word fits their behavior).

The EU online services which cannot be provided via a web site (noscript/basic HTML), which are very few to none, should use well defined, as simple as possible, stable in time, open and published protocols/file formats. That can be 'subset' of broadly available protocols/file formats. The benchmark is writing real-life code to handle such protocols/file formats should be reasonable for a very small team of devs or a solo average dev.

I wonder where all the money to deal with web apps is actually going, you know where web sites were carefully broken...

> "In the EU, there is a a political discussion about outlawing privacy." > "In the US, the government is using illegal methods to violate rights granted by the constitution." Agreed one is obviously better than the other. The EU treats privacy as a privilege granted by the government while the US treats it as a fundamental right. .."the US treats it as a fundamental right." Not gonna lie, didnt expect on HN to forget this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowden_disclosures

Well, HN has a lot of fascists these days who prefer the snooping.

As an adult, who despises all those apps, I don't want to grant government the power to make that decision for me.

An an adult, do you also believe seat belt laws are a bad thing?

Yes. And I always wear my seat belt.

Get rid of the very site you're on then?

Yeah, like how hn has an algorithm that ranks stories to maximise engagement... obviously this is not bad but somehow tiktok is bad

People are complaining about products engineered to be as addictive as possible, we're talking about something more than simple self control

everybody has a choice to just uninstall apps, leave the phone at home, switch it off at 8pm etc. that's what it means to be an adult. some people get addicted to work or sports - people even died from it - should we ban that, too?

The article is discussing regulating the algorithms, not banning the social networks. Just like cigarettes and alcohol are regulated but not banned

When hn pushes 99% content other than tech then yes. It'll literally be the same.

So it's ok if hackernews "manipulated (me) into (needing) to spend more time on them artificially" because it's tech? Can you see the mental gymnastics is you're having to pull up make this work?

Nope, the key difference is the blast radius, with hn you might buy into very specific policies related to tech while on TikTok you can be exposed to seemingly endless directions even though you just wanted to watch tech.
