Exactly. I should have added "up to date security patches, and functioning google and banking apps" to my list as well to cover my bases on why I can't just use an old phone with a custom ROM. Otherwise I'd just use the Galaxy S3 for the rest of my life.

That's weird! I got braces recently and I had to go through the FaceID process again because it didn't recognized me anymore. Obviously my teeth are quite different with my mouth open, but apparently, it modified my face enough when mouth closed that FaceID thaught I was not myself anymore.
Wow, that’s pretty interesting. I wouldn’t think that would be enough to impact it without some accompanying procedures, like expanding the pallet, or some kind of jaw surgery. Was it right away from getting the braces put on (from a little extra bulk on the teeth), or after they’ve been on for several months, where the movement of the teeth could change the structure of the face around the mouth?
I wonder if it depends on the phone model as well, and specifically on the quality of whatever sensor they use for depth perception.

#494They mention the Pixel and I just got to say, I wish someone would bring back the fingerprint reader on the back of the phone. That was seriously the best solution. Fastest way to unlock your phone, because no matter how slow the fingerprint reader is you activate it while pulling it out of your pocket. I honestly don't get why people like Face ID more (what I currently use). Someone, please bring this back

This does not scale at all. For hobbyist with no kids, sure, spend your time turning old phone for some fancy doorbell, etc. But for normals? Who would maintain such equipment, who would be in charge of testing if the battery will not get overheated once the new device stays for longer time in place X? Who would maintain and support such devices. I don't want to service myself my media player.
Sure but if old phones could be used like a really powerful raspberry pi (and they are really much more powerful, at least the high end) then the resale value would go up and more people would sell theirs to nerds rather than throwing it away. Still a net positive IMO

I use my index finger on the rear scanner on the...S9+, I think? Works fine.
The S9 wasn't super bad but the S8's was right beside the cam which really sucked. Constantly getting fingerprints all over the camera.

What about alternatives like CalyxOS or /e/OS? GrapheneOS is aiming at the best possible security, so they won't compromise. CalyxOS and /e/OS run on FairPhones (though it seems like /e/OS is more into privacy and less into security).

I use a Oneplus 9 pro with Iodé OS (based on LineageOS). It comes with Aurora store and MicroG pre-installed. It works very good and I'm very happy with. It is regularly synced with security updates from LineageOS.

How often are you listening to music on your phone while it's charging? (because otherwise you can always just attach an adapter onto your headphones to make it USB-C). Seems like a weird hang up.
First, that's almost all the time for me because my primary use case for listening to music is in the car. Second, adapters are not a good solution because they can easily be lost.
I use a Bluetooth audio receiver in my car. It has a Jack output that you can plug into your car's amp. You connect your phone to it through Bluetooth, and then you can play music in your car. It's very convenient, because your phone automatically connects when you turn it on, and you don't have to mess with cables. They're also pretty cheap.

I would say that for last years it was quite the opposite… Asus Zenfone was a bit smaller, and few others… all of them being on the more pricey range. I do not remember anything I remember having few years ago phone from "Note" series… and yet - it was smaller than "normal" nowadays.

These are not smartphones. You cannot do anything with them except phone, SMS, some alarms and make pictures with very crappy quality. So these are effectively just phones, like 20 years ago. They are not extensible by any app, just what the manufacturer adds for factory provided programs. I would be small (lightweight) phones. I cannot bare these 180–220g devices. If I want something heavy I buy a tablet.
No? Galaxy Z Flip is a smartphone. Razr is a smartphone.
