But there are some suspicious looking numbers and events that happened. I personally don't believe that they are true, but why not just investigate them? People distrust dominion voting systems; Just allow a bipartisan audit. People think certain votes were counted without both parties present; just recount those votes. Where is the harm in just being absolutely sure of things? If you just shut down people because th…

Every state already did that. There is no evidence of widespread fraud. Georgia, in particular, was crystal clear about this.

They have recounted the votes in Georgia like 2 or 3 times. Wisconsin was also recounted once. I didn't check the other states.

People don’t seem to understand, censorship is a double edged sword. You never know who will be in charge years from now and will abuse those very same good intentioned laws & we end up a police state.

People don't seem to understand what censorship is. Nobody is threatening throwing them in jail for saying anything, platforms are just saying "your speech is not welcome in my platform". They can still say whatever they want it in the streets. If they want a platform for it they can build it themselves....

Suddenly half the population is realizing the cons of centralized platforms. Curious if this moment sparks renewed interest in decentralized tech of yesteryear ie the good ol world wide web.

s/half the population/a little less than a third of 70% of the population Or maybe about 45% of 70% of the population. Sources: Pew Research says registered voters are about evenly split between R (29%),D (33%), and independent (34%), and also notes that the independents are pretty evenly split between “leans R” and “leans D” for a total of 44/49% here: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/10/26/what-the-20...…

Could you not just have a VPN-based board where everything fell outside of US jurisdiction?

The biggest Mastodon federation instance is now Gab (far-right social media platform).

Last I heard they stopped federating, sadly, but still work via a Mastodon client.

Because everyone else blocked them.

Freedom of speech does not mean that others have to provide access to their communities.

Yes, that is what reddit, twitter and Hacker News reinforce constantly. It's either because it's true, or because the other side has been repeatedly discouraged from adding their two cents in those communities. I've been seeing the world through this lens for so long that I can't tell. I find it somewhat implausible that half the population is dumb, racist and all those other labels. It seems much more likely that I…

It's far more likely that half the population has been duped into following someone because of clever conniving. Trump knew exactly what to do to build up that base and now that their head is gone, the chicken is running around in the yard with no direction wondering what the hell happened. Once the dust settles, I think a lot of those people will reintegrate into society, especially if they start to receive the bene…

I very rarely hear this hope expressed and I struggle to believe it—can you elaborate?

You're trying to skate over the difference between good-faith political debate and bad-faith encouragement of violence and sedition. Diverse dissenting views are fine. Plotting armed violence to overturn a legitimate election result isn't. If the far-right can't operate without plotting armed violence - and there's plenty of evidence it can't - then it puts itself outside the reach of any free speech arguments. Not j…

> Plotting armed violence to overturn a legitimate election result isn't. Not condoning any sort of violence or the riots from Wednesday but I think it is worth observing that the problem isn't that there are people who are trying to "overturn a legitimate election result". The problem is that there are people who believe that the election results were not legitimate. They are acting on that premise and so in their m…

> Simply asserting that they are wrong will not change things

No one is “simply asserting”. They’ve dragged this to court and had ~60 cases thrown out for a lack of evidence. They’ve made the choice to ignore this and acted out, violently, at the prompting of their favorite social-media driven personalities.

Someone brought an interesting perspective in another thread and I can't shake it off. The other side keeps deplatforming them. Their legal cases are rejected. The mainstream media refuses to take them seriously. We're not even listening to them, because it's science and they're *ists if they disagree. We're not debating anymore. We just assume we're right. We are slowly squeezing a significant segment of the populat…

This is not an interesting perspective, nor is it new.

Americans have been politely deplatforming each other for a long while. It’s only become an issue now, and attracted a nice term for it.

I’ll skip the issue that one side isn’t really there for a conversation in the first place.

Instead I’ll demonstrate that the cable news era already built its own filter bubbles and significantly reduced the ability for one side (the left) to Influence the other (the right).

I clearly remember that climate frauds were given air time on Fox. When that air time resulted in politicians pushing anti climate views, actual climate scientists came to FOX to make their case. Instead they were faced with ridicule, in the same way that throwing people to lions was a fun spectacle for the audience.

This ability to divide reality kept evolving till America showed the world that its possible to undo science. Remember Creationism? An anti science argument, designed to confuse children and adults with the goal of disproving evolution!

“Teach the debate”, that most fraudulent of arguments, implying that scientific debates on evolution meant that evolution itself was not a solid idea.

And it worked!

When the right filter bubble avoids reporting things in a manner that allow for a fair middle ground to be reached, then what?

I’ll tell you now, you need to remove money from the news, which even to me sounds like an insane idea.

I would heartily recommend that people stop worrying about deplatforming. It’s worked great for the American Right. While people here may decry Trump, he managed to snag 2 SC seats, unknown numbers of other judges, defunded everything, fought China, and even today has a 42% approval rating!

MORE people came out to vote for Trump this election than they did when he ran against Hillary.

Worry instead that deplatforming works.

And then realize that while this will go on to be a massive comment thread, there are entire countries under the thumbs of despots or regions ruled by local leaders who never get heard about, and who will never get deplatformed, because it will never get the attention of the people running Twitter/FB.

Parler, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook were definitely used to storm Congress. Snapchat, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook also were definitely used to burn down parts of Minneapolis, Chicago, and LA. Massive Big Tech conglomerates must be busted through antitrust enforcement and Section 230 must be updated to ban predatory algorithms which have inflamed 7 years of sectarian chaos. It's not a free speech issue:…

I’m so done with all of this. It’s time to break them up. Who is “them”? All of them.

I’d highly reccomend that people look at how the media sphere in America is split, not just the tech social media sphere.

America had problems before Social Media dialed it up to 11. Those problems aren’t going away.
