I really do not like discourse. Mail lists are better because you stay in the loop, plus Gmail is better for searching emails than discourse searches itself.
How do you search messages from before you joined the mailing list?

You check the mailing list archives - those usually have a web based interface.
Admittedly I was being facetious: OP said mailing lists are better than a forum, but for searching the archive you need a forum-like interface anyway.

I would recommend using Nheko instead, and not registering on the overloaded flagship server. I have an old matrix.org account as a backup but I try to use smaller servers mostly.
What most people here seem to forget, is once a social platform gains traction and especially attention from the main masses, it undoubtedly require checks and balances. Predators, racism, gore, pedophilia, harassment, stalking and so on.. No matter how high you value security, these are matters that hurt real people today. If you attract the mainstream, you must deal with it.
For example - we let people drive cars despite the frequency of deaths that happen in car accidents.
