Browser engine lock-in - no Firefox+uBlock Origin = me no buy. And yes, there is Orion, which can run uBlock, but it and Safari have horrible UI/UX.

Same here. I have an M1 Max with 64GB and the only time I notice a slowdown is doing Rust release builds with `lto = true` and `codegen-units = 1`, which makes complete sense. Otherwise there is _plenty_ of multicore performance for debug builds, webdev, web browsing, etc., often all at once.

Fill out your SSD to 90% or more (and keep it there), and you'll understand how quickly things can go south.

Why would I ever do that?

What is a 17' M3 Pro?

Almost certain it is just a 16in M3 Pro, but mistyped.

That is just one very simple part, connecting the mouse. Literally everything else sucks on iOS. File management, hidden menus, running multiple apps, system management... and the list goes on. Need to convert a STEP file to something else on the iPad? Download 15 apps to see which one works, then try to find the converted file in the abomination of a file system? iOS is hot garbage.

iPadOS works differently from macOS and if you aren’t willing to learn that, you will think it is bad. The problem isn’t the OS.

Most laptops sit on a desk and never see a lap, even Macs. Benchmarking how long people could sit with a laptop on their lap while running Geekbench could be an interesting metric though.

I can't even remember PCs now (been 10+ years on Macs) but heat is still an issue (especially in summer in hot climates) if the thing is going to throttle.

I've got a laptop of the times when you switched to a Mac. It's warm in winter, which is nice, but not so warm to be a problem in summer. My workloads are mild, Django and Rails. Even the test suites are not CPU bound. Linux, not Windows.

I work with Logic Pro X often. I bought an iPad Pro M4 and the Logic version for it is really compelling. Touch faders and the UI are well thought out. The problem is they want me to subscribe to use it. I wish I could just outright purchase it for $300.

They should charge less if offering one-time. $300 only beats $50/year after 6-7 years, depending on the discount value you would assign to a present value calculation. In software it's more typical to calibrate that around 2-3 years. I like the design as well.

Logic Pro for Mac is $200.

I just don't understand the iPad + Magic Keyboard. Combined, they weigh as much as a macbook, which has a much better pad+KB and an OS that isn't crippled.

It's about 10% increase from M4, which is impressive. But, hey, I don't think I'm not even using 10% of the M4 processing power on my iPad. What's the point?

Apple seriously need to open up development on/for iPadOS, or it'll become something you by every decade or so. Who needs new model if people can't even utilize what they have right now?

Won’t change how slow it is to run docker containers in VMs on macOS.

docker definitely runs faster inside linux running in a VM on macOS. funny how that works given the overhead on running a VM, but it seems running on a linux & ext4fs interfaces give it quite a performance boost.
