Humans already made dogs.

Should we be working on genetic engineering to make dogs as smart as people with the goal that they should continue working for us as servants?

Maybe! Dogs were bred to fulfil specific jobs for centuries already. But AI tech seems far easier to get to the required level of performance, and also doesn't have any of the disadvantages of being tied to flesh.

This is the dumbest question ever. I guess you need to ask 1B+ LLM users. But hey, I already know you'd say you personally would never use it for these purposes. Moreover, of the two of us you appear to have "shareholder" mentality. How profitable are volunteers serving food to homeless people? I guess they have no value then.

How many of those users are paying users? What’s the churn rate? And how profitable are OpenAI and other providers? They’re running at a loss. The startups using LLMs as their product are only viable as long as they get free credits from OpenAI. The only people making a profit are NVidia.

Sounds like the last paragraph of my comment flew right over your head.

They might be rational, but taking things out of context as much as happens with any AI / environment narrative gives off a strong "arsenic-free cauliflower" smell.

If you take a report like this: https://mitsloan.mit.edu/ideas-made-to-matter/ai-has-high-da... You can: 1. Dismiss it by believing the projections are very wrong and much too high 2. Think 20% of all energy consumed isn't that bad. 3. Find it concerning environmentally All takes have some weight behind them in my opinion. I don't think this is a case of "arsenic-free cauliflower", maybe unless you claim #1, but that…

I starting writing a response to your post, but as I kept writing and investigating, it became clear that the MIT article you linked is just overflowing with false statements, half truths, stretched truths, and unsourced information.

It is legitimately one of the most misleading pieces of press I've read in a while.

The 21% value is unsourced, the single image = full phone charge is wrong in so many ways I had written 3 paragraphs picking apart both the MIT publication and the huggingface paper's methodology, and so on.

I'm happy to be given evidence that AI is ruinous in terms of more than its social effects, but this publication has made me incredibly suspicious of anyone claiming this to be the case.

Is a banana taped to a wall "art?" Your answer to that is the answer to your question.

> Your answer to that is the answer to your question. In what logical or philosophical framework does my opinion dictate your opinion? You're not making a grand philosophical point, you're frustrating the attempts of other people to understand your point of view and either blocking them from understanding your point of view or addressing your argument in a meaningful way. If you cannot or will not engage in the conve…

It is a rhetorical device that nevertheless clearly explains the various thought groups of AI art. If one requires human creation rather than mere human intent to be art, then similarly they can't consider a banana taped to a wall as art, nor AI as art either. But if one considers the former but then discounts the latter, then that's a logical hypocrisy. I am of the group that considers both as art, because both require human intention.

Being an 'AI' hater is like being a 'motor' hater or an 'electricity' hater. You can hate the impact you assume it will have on society, but hating it will not change that it is so radically useful that it will never again not be used unless we overthrow all global value around doing things efficiently.

Why not look at the broader context instead of flail out against the machine? What is it about society that makes the automation of labor a bad thing?

As for art, it has always been about how you use the materials and resources you have. Photographs didn't make painting obsolete, but they rendered the pursuit of pure realism painting obsolete. 'AI' generated art does not make any other artform obsolete, but it will make the mechanical regurgitation of derivative works obsolete. If you want to do this on your own, like if you want to paint photorealistic paintings, you are still free to.

A lot of valid arguments. But the conclusion (hate) is not constructive. LLMs are here, and they are going to stay. Like cars, internet or smartphones.

Thats nonsense and just feeds the inevitability narrative.

Realistically how would you imagine that we put AI back in the bottle?

Someone get this man a Claude Max subscription already.

thanks but no thanks. Would rather not support a company involved in the mass slaughter of children.

Are there any large companies that are not in some way involved in the mass slaughter of children?

Eh, it's not a great article, but I prefer the balance of it being present. FWIW I feel seemingly the opposite, that there are way too many posts here filled with comments by AI startup CEOs or comments copied from r/singularity circa February. It seems equally boring and nontechnical as what you describe.

I don't want a "balance" where we have half r/singularity slop and half luddite rage. Those aren't the only choices. I want interesting apolitical technical content, as encouraged by the guidelines, written and commented on by people who know what they're talking about.

Thankfully this post has been flagged. HN generally seems to police itself well when it comes to flamebait articles like this.

They have a lot of advantages too like self repair and a built in ability to interact with the physical world.

So you’d be fine owning a dog with human level intelligence?

Cynicism is the new virtue to signal for the tech elite class. New technology is the ideal way for those people to signal their cynicism. > Critics have already written thoroughly about the environmental harms, the reinforcement of bias and generation of racist output, the cognitive harms and AI supported suicides, the problems with consent and copyright, the way AI tech companies further the patterns of empire, how…

Do you also rail against the "word salad" coming out of the AI marketing blogs that are also posted to this site?

Yes, of course. You also see those flagged to just as this one has been now. Turns out people don't like word salad of any kind.
