"Ubuntu". It's widely accepted nowadays, it was pretty weird in 2004. I got my fair share of jokes in 2005-2007 from friends when talking about that "ubuntu" thing, and I'll spare you the examples.

"Ubuntu" is an African word that means "I'm not able to install Debian" :D

A lot of companies have/had mixed RHEL/CentOS environments, with RHEL on the machines they really want RH support for and CentOS on everything else to save money. Not really, I have seen CentOS based infrastructure having more problems (xfs breaking docker, frankenkernel 3.10 in 2020?) whereas with Debian things just works and are not heavily patched to the point of breaking ABI.

In a vacuum, absolutely. I think GP's point was that if you already have to run the frankenkernel on some machines (because of support), then it makes management easier if you at least run the same broken frankenkernel on all of them.

For RHEL Server (MSRP) Self-Support: $350/yr Standard: $800/yr Premium: $1300/yr Those are all starting points without including potential addons.

Apparently the self-support edition isn't allowed to be ran on VMs. WTF?

That is concerning. How is Oracle Linux compared to Rocky Linux. Why not people use Oracle Linux which is a decent company backed product.

Product might be decent but Oracle is far from being decent.

As others have pointed out, the name is a tribute to a late CentOS cofounder Rocky McGaugh. It would be sad if it had to be changed. We should perhaps emphasize the CentOS lineage in the name instead.

I didn't know about the "Rocky" tribute, but IMHO it would still work as a great nod to Rocky McGaugh with "Rock" instead of "Rocky".

The ftp site does not contain sources for RHEL 8 (it's just sources for a bunch of add-on packages). The RHEL 8 sources are in git.centos.org, though not in SRPM form. I know that GPL only requires Red Hat to provide sources on request to those receiving their binaries. But in principle the receiver can then legally redistribute those sources. Now AFAICT nobody's actually doing that redistributing. I don't know wheth…

Red Hat is overly protective of their trademarks, and this includes CentOS, Fedora, CoreOS etc

Theoretically Oracle Linux and CentOS are identical except the branding, except CentOS has been abandoned and Oracle is just getting started with OL.

But Oracle are the company we probably trust the least with matters like this.
