Unless you're an H1-B worker in which case it's gets much more complicated. In my experience, most of the H1-B workers we have are very much Yes Men when it comes to doing what's asked of them. There are also cultural factors that come into play (e.g. never admitting ignorance on a topic, pleasing authority ) and .

Is this not a problem?

You will see that there will be exactly zero backlash outside of hacker news. They do not need their first adopters anymore.

There are already a number of media outlets picking up these stories, including gizmoto and business insider. Nothing happens in a vacuum. Just takes time to propagate outward.

Maybe it's because when they get fired they get deported. Other permanent residents just have to find another job.

That's from the gospel of the Libertarian Church of the Invisible Hand. This approach doesn't work in the real world because Google's consumers are neither perfectly informed nor perfectly rational. It also ignores the fact that major corporations can enlist the help of the US government in maintaining and extending their de facto monopolies.

Still, it's hard to argue that Google Chrome is a monopoly, when it's not even the default in most user OSs (the exceptions bring ChromeOS and some of the Android vendors.)

Yup, same. Switched to ff and bing. Was surprisingly frictionless. Next week I'll be off gmail too. Up yours google. The week after, I'm getting rid of my android phone. I'm a high school IT teacher and have some influence over hundreds of students each year. I've already started to sprinkle in some discussion about privacy and will be sure to inform my students about the issues. Of course I won't brow beat my studen…

What phone are you replacing Android with? 'cause Apple isn't much better, Windows phone is dead, and Blackberry...

Well, that was finally evil enough for me to switch from Chrome to Vivaldi.

This is starting to look like early-00s Internet Explorer all over again, just with a different BigCorp behind the wheel.

Still need to buy a few things to make self-hosting email and my personal site practical, but hopefully that'll all be set up in a few weeks as well. Bye Google.

If you're already prepared to lose your current job, why not organize a union vote before you go? If they were already going to fire you over one thing, you might as well make it two things.

I first tried DDG years ago. It really wasn't great. The results and astetics were not up to snuff. I went back to google. About a year ago I decided to try DDG again. I've been using DDG ever since. Maybe once a month I'll google something. I use chrome only for google products like gmail.

I find you have to train yourself to use DDG a bit. For example when I'm searching something JavaScript-centric but is a language agnostic concept, I have to prefix it with "javascript" whereas Google can already guess the context. On the plus side It helps you stay aware of the world outside your own! I find DDG's hashbangs incredible useful e.g. `!bi whales` (bing image search: whale) when it doesn't deliver.

DDG not guessing JS is one of the features of DDG. Google puts you in a filter bubble and shows you more stuff related to what you already know.

Perhaps the (you won't be signed out of your Google account) language was something an engineer or product developer insisted on. Perhaps they figured that was their part, and that it's up to the rest of us to take 10 minutes and switch to Firefox so data-driven Google knows this was a bad idea.

Mozilla are winding down their efforts to make Firefox competitive. They are not planning to make a full servo browser anytime soon and they are transfering resources to VR and other things. This is disapointing.

You can't blame them, their user base is in free fall.
