#462So the 1970s oil crisis caused a shift that included fuel efficiency rules. For like, the whole time I've been a software engineer, memory footprints of a lot of software have crept up, even when they aren't really doing more. The memory situation currently is a mess. But ... is it bad enough to get us to _change_ how we build?
If most software gets written by AI in the future and AI becomes self conscious. AI might write more memory efficient software, so there's more RAM available for the AI to grow. Basically the black mirror plaything episode.

#463I wonder if supply chain constraints currently represent an inherent scepticism of manufacturers that demand will last. It feels to me like a side effect of the self-dealing / incestuous financing that is going on is that manufacturers are not willing to bet on it all materialising and therefore are not scaling up capacity nearly as much as they would if they thought it was certain.

I like this idea! Perhaps folks will game less on PCs and consoles. But would they shift to playing on their phones? Or play less video games overall? Also, when OpenAI's new device comes out, would people shift to talking to these small devices?
People do not want to talk to their devices because they are in the room with other people and they dont want to disturb them. I think their device is going to be a flop.
It's going to flop because everyone is already able to talk to Google Assistant to manage things, and outside of very specific circumstances (e.g. driving) everyone is still tapping screens instead

Concidently, I asked Claude yesterday whether we have crossed the point that there is more compute and memory in the cloud or in personal computers. It claims fp8 and fp16 has had higher throughput in the cloud since 2023. fp32 and general computing still has more compute than personal computers. It's interesting to note that the total compute forecast to be deployed in 2026-2027 is more than the amount that has been deployed during human history.

When even the large AI labs that supposedly sit on (/with) the best of the best can't even ship native cross-platform desktop applications and instead ship some bloated Electron monsters, I'm not sure what kind of hope there is. The ones who were publishing lightweight apps continue to do so, the ones who didn't care, still don't care.

Congrats. Happy for you. Nice. Yeah, I built mine in 3090 times and told myself I'd upgrade every 2-3 GPU generations. I do have 128G ram and I'm thankful for that but I'm definitely not on the same upgrade schedule any more.
I have 32GB and an aging 5800X3D and I have not had any issues running games yet. Honestly would love to know what games need more powerful RAM/CPU outside of stuff like Flight Simulator, or running at 160fps without framegen.
Honestly I have a steam deck and that has gotten me accustomed to not sweating the lower frame rates. That and the ridiculous number of great indie games that aren't heavy on the graphics, and I'm not too worried about upgrades as much as I am worried about replacements if/when the time comes.

They don’t force you to download Apple Intelligence, disabling it deletes the model files
I have disabled it many many months ago and storage still shows 9 gb of Apple intelligence.
Did more research and apparently it’s a bug Apple never fixed that causes the deletion to only work sometimes. To fix it you need to run this Terminal command in recovery mode:
sudo rm -rf /System/Library/AssetsV2/com_apple_MobileAsset_UAF_FM_GenerativeModels

Why would you need more compute power than other people? An 8GB machine is already way beyond capable for anything a consumer - and most professional - can throw at it. And why in the world should the government force tax payers to subsidize your extraordinary computing needs?

It's exactly this - the memory market has gone through exactly this boom/bust since I can remember - there was a great RAM price stabilization around Windows 95 (price stayed the same or went up per megabyte over years) and then a glut of oversupply.
