Re: Sony deletes more movies from the accounts of people who ‘bought’ them

I read recently that PlayStation users are moving to PC en masse, and also Xbox has been gutted by layoffs, and there's a backlash against Nintendo for the switch 2 pricing. Is the age of the console finally coming to an end?

It's just loud Internet people. The Switch 2 is the second fastest selling game system of all time, and is keeping up with the trajectory of the first Switch, which shipped the most units of any gaming system. It'll probably get further boosts as Splatoon Raiders comes out (Splatoon is huge in Japan) and other anticipated titles. https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2026/06/switch-2s-first-ye... I can't say I know anyon…

The switch and switch 2 are unique because:

- Nintendo is the only console player putting out high-quality first party games at an acceptable level. Yes this is arguable but I won't.

- The switch and switch 2 are reasonably priced, even cheap. Again arguable - the switch 2 had a lot of backlash for it's price. But 450/500 vs 800, come on now.

- The switch and switch 2 are hybrid consoles, both home consoles and portable. Again, I've had people argue with me that the switch is not a home console. I used it for 7 years exclusively hooked up to my monitor and TV. It's a home console.

The overall perception of Nintendo is that they're largely evil and greedy, and they are. But once you look at the value prop itself and the $$$, it's not crazy because Microsoft and Sony are also evil and greedy. Consumers see price tags, not pop culture discourse. They see the Switch 2 is the best priced new gen console, and that the games are actually typically equivalent in price or cheaper especially when stupid DLC is factored in. People were paying 100+ dollars for single games 5 years ago on Sony and Microsoft platforms. Yes Mario Kart world is 80 dollars. But big picture.

Nobody has a right to have an economic value for what they sell. That is a special privilege, not a right, and harms everyone for the enrichment of the privileged

Nobody has any right/privilege at all, except what a system of rights/privileges spells out. Behind a system of rights there is always a philosophy, which either postulates rights, or certain primary rights, as being somehow inherent or "inalienable", or else somehow justifies the establishment of rights without circular reasoning ("we need these rights so we can have nice things").

Sure, and I say we should exclude a system of rights and privileges which involves intellectualnproperty

Nobody has a right to have an economic value for what they sell. This is true. (It's true in every other industry as well.) But the opposite side of that coin is that if you want people to spend the considerable amounts of time and money required to create new works that are actually any good then you need to have some viable model for compensating them that makes it worthwhile for them to do that. Whatever else you…

Copyright is not a way to compensate for innovation. Innovation is compensated by being first to market. The specific rent that copyright causes is due to holding the copyright and restricting the produced supply. Copyright provides compensation even while mantaining the status quo and not doing any innovation, just by holding the intellectual property. Without copyright, there is a specific revenue for bringing something to market, and that revenue disappears as the new becomes old. Since the specific revenue is bringing something new to market innovation is compensated.

Intellectual property creates compensation without a corresponding benefit to the public.

Edit: to add to this, the existence of copyright today does not show it has been effective for creating innovation. You need a counterfactual for that, which you did not provide.

That's a truly weird analogy.

It's a truly weird scenario... why would you consider it property when it resides on another person's computer ?

Intellectual Property is a well-established kind of property.

Pretty sure you could get some action from the ACCC here in Australia if you go through the process to lodge a complaint.

Why, do you want Sony to add mandatory Digital ID to their platform?

The fuck has digital ID got to do with anything?

The ACCC goes after companies for anti consumer behaviour… Like taking away stuff you have bought, or misleading consumers by calling renting buying.

The ACCC is the compliance and enforcement body for Digital ID for all Australians.

Didn’t know, but it makes sense to hand them that. And I still don’t see how it has anything to do with what we were talking about.

Sony is obviously the villain here (and pretty much always) but I think this points to an unsolved problem with our model of digital ownership: it's based on the media company providing a service...forever? People in this thread are saying customers should get refunds and I disagree - customers should get video files! We need a model of digital ownership that does not involve the media owner forever delivering that m…

> but I think this points to an unsolved problem with our model of digital ownership:

"unsolved" gives the charity of thinking that someone is working hard around the clock to figure out a proper solution. It's instead like this by design. Companies love the power to sell for premium and take away at a whim. To mislead and not be punished. These are parts of how consumer laws came about in the physical world.

But our governmetns are very slow to adapt to the digital world (and are doing their own share of ransacking instead). We're some 5 levels of magnitude away from a society where we can start to truly ponder regulations around owning, reselling, and modifying our own digitial goods.

Ohioans need to elect better reps then, don't they?

It’s a lot easier to act as a few people than as millions. Let’s not pretend this is some fair fight.

No one ever said life is fair. Most people also eventually understand that you'll always need to fight for what is right.

No, I won't understand. These people who don't give a shit, they are the problem . They're the ones who finance these corporations and enable their abusive practices.

They are indeed part of the problem, but you cannot blame them. You have to blame those who caused their situation to be so dire, making them lack support. These people work 2 jobs, have a young kid, a demented parent or a bedridden sister that need constant support. If they take the time to give a shit about politics, their dependent dies. You don't seem to know how incredibly stressful and exhausting the life of so…

>If they take the time to give a shit about politics, their dependent dies.

Meanwhile, their healtchare provider canceled on their parent because they gaslit the family into saying "this isn't covered in out service" and the parent dies. Because they did not give a shit about politics.

This isn't asking for a part time civics duty hobby. Just to stop pretending all politicians are the same and take a few hours to vote. It'll save you a few weeks of battling with UnitedHealthcare over a very treatable issue.

>Do something about their situation that gives them the time to participate in real life.

That also requires votes and calls to the represenatives.
