That really is not a backup. You should store things in files (disk images or archives) and media that you control and can checksum. And which you know you can recover from without relying on any service, company, or download being available in the future. Make sure to replicate before the media rots and have redundant copies. That way, digital data can be kept unchanged indefinitely.

With SD cards relatively cheap I long thought about, why delete them at all. Just put them into a box after importing the images/when full. So you still have a physical backup.

Because it's a waste of money, space, effort, and nature as well as an unreliable backup that gives you a false sense of security. As well as a good way to leak information.

But yes, keeping the cards for a while and rotating a large pool can be a good approach. When they're in actual reliable ro-at-rest, checksummed, possibly encrypted, offline backup, the cards can be reused. (Always format in device etc.)

I'm amazed at what Google was okay with. For a while there, if you had access to Chrome's files, for a user logged in with Chrome that had a credit card on file with Google, you could initiate a Google Pay payment with no further authorization. They also used to let anyone add any gmail address to a Google Groups group, and send out unfilterable spam as a message from that group.

They still do, I use add-anyone all the time. The trick is that they implemented serious anti-spam on groups, which them allows them to keep this feature. It's of course not perfect but good enough.

From my understanding the biggest reason is actually security features that only the Pixels can meet. I'm sure the reference device thing is a factor though so I don't think you're wrong

How does one finance a project or a company with increased maintenance costs and lower quality production? That’s what technical debt is. It’s the cost for moving forward quickly. I’m not sure I understand what you’re trying to state.

Yeah, seconded. For all cameras of all brands, pop the SD card out and into a reliable reader (I recommend Lexar and Sony hubs). Never use the camera over USB, the experience is terrible on everything from Canon to Sony to Panasonic to Fuji. Don't fight it, just buy that $30 USB hub and get on with your day.

Exactly. I'm no longer even a semi-pro photog, but these days I even just plug in a USB-C SD reader into my iPhone and upload them that way, it's quite nice really. No corruption yet for me, but I only shot a thousand photos on my trip to Italy, and few other than that these days!

Fortunate. I remember when an SD card reader would NOT work on an iPhone, and yet the same device and iOS on the iPad would work. Obviously on purpose.

I’m an old Unix guy. Files are files. Card to computer. Process later.

Even though I use Nextcloud for documents, I have been using Photoprism [1] for a while now, and I like it very much. It isn't perfect, but so far it is the best solution for browsing my photos that I have been using.

You can host it yourself, and it has quite a range of features.

What's the use case for this? I run a Nextcloud instance and the Android app automatically backs up photos taken with the stock camera app to my server.

It is waaay faster and supports AI classification (showing photos with a specific person, finding photos with a dog in them, etc), has some editing tools in the client apps, is generally nicer to work with. Its server can also work as a storage for their 2FA authenticator Ente Auth. Everything is open-source, data is E2E encrypted, stored in S3 (can use Minio ro Garage, for example). Uses Postgres DB.
