I am not talking about communism. Nobody on today's political left spectrum of is seriously talking about communism. This is about socialism, or social capitalism.

36% of millennials in the US have a favorable view of communism. 35% for marxism. 50% for capitalism.

I think there’s a difference between appreciating those among us who have it for their perspective and differences and wishing it upon your child. I admit I was absolutely relieved when pre-natal screening was negative for it, both times. But if that was the hand we were dealt, then I’d take it. But that doesn’t mean I want it.

My friends baby tested positive for down syndrome in one of the early screenings. They suggested termination. When my friend asked what the chances were they said on that test they had a 1 in 100 chance of down syndrome. That baby did not have down syndrome and is now a happy seven year old.

How early was this screening? I've not heard of a 1 in 100 chance, and I really struggle to believe medical practitioners would be suggesting termination. I suspect something was lost in translation when you were told the story.

This is all the vibe I get too, but also just: the science isn't there. You can actually end up worse off trying to do PGS screening for intelligence; we may not know enough to do it without also selecting for negative traits, like autism (intelligence and autism aren't as I understand it inextricably linked, but can be confounded in polygenic scores; the notion that you can get any reliably signal at all from PGS for intelligence is itself super shaky). There are embryo selection companies that did intelligence screening that stopped doing it, because it turned out their methodologies were busted.

If you know of a communist country that has had good civil rights and good prosperity, let me know.

Could say the same thing about capitalism. Is it the US with a $7 minimum wage and bankrupt medical treatment? Is it the UK where the average salary is $37k and houses cost 500k, and a single train ride is 10% of monthly salary? Is it Germany where they arrest you for displaying a Palestinian flag?

And frequently we decide they’re damaged . Seems like its really the rest of us who are damaged.

So why are we taking care of them? They can go get their own jobs, housing, manage food, health, etc.

Being happy doesn’t mean you ok. They require extensive care throughout their lives

I realise that, but my point is that it’s completely irrelevant how enjoyable they sometimes are to be around. They’re people. It’s trivially in the best interests of the person not to be born with Down’s syndrome if possible.

Normal development starts with having the normal number of chromosomes. I would think this is elementary biology.

I think of it as more of a probability question. There is a much greater chance of a person having two copies of chromosome 21 instead of three. "Normal" often carries some form of judgement but I guess technically you are correct to use the word.

No. Having two copies of each chromosome is NORMAL. Having 3 is NOT normal. Being completely unwilling to make normative statements seems rather cowardly.
