Is their hardware really open source? Are they making money? Is a $799 phone with hardware that dates 5 years back considered a "viable consumer product", or is this a niche device that just shows how open source fails to produce viable consumer products?

If you use Linux on an Apple laptop, you are less likely to use their software stores, mobile phones, tablets, headphones, etc. The integratedness of Apple's offerings depend on the control they have on both software and hardware. I think it's the integratedness that sells Apple's product.

But is amount of people that want to use Linux on an Apple laptop going to be relevant to Apple? Given most consumer would rather use preloaded OS and the state of the linux on the desktop, I don't really think it matters to Apple.

Agreed. But the point I argues was that Apple does not care because they sell hardware either way. I think they care a lot their hardware is used to runt their software, as this is a big reason to sell more hardware.

You are spreading FUD. The phone can do almost everything, including 3D-games.

Nothing, but the DTK uses it.

Interesting. It's either that Apple wanted to use it as the first-gen ARM-based Macs or that they planned it to be used internally and in the DTK while M1 isn't ready.

Either way, it's quite impressive to have deliberately engineered dark silicon on consumer devices.

You can learn to dabble in web development in that time, but you'll barely have taken the first step toward being a serious software engineer.

They said that it was possible to contribute to open source, which is surely true. Not that they could be a kernel developer.

Granted, but six weeks is easily long enough to learn how to assemble a computer, or to do basic soldering. If we're going to compare hardware skills and software skills, let's do so in a reasonable way. If we're talking about building a new system from the ground up, I think the comparison to kernel development is about right.

Much skill is needed to make a serious contribution to an open hardware project, but the same is true for many types of software.

PCB design doesn't involve much coding. It's typically done in a semi-manual way using a CAD-like interface. Here's an example for a simple board:
