And WTF is it about mud guards now? When i was young all bicycles came with mud guard (then called "fenders") front and rear. Now they seem to be anathema. Every bike I rode w/o fenders put a stripe of mud up my back!

Spokes could make a fantastic heatsink, plenty of airflow. Or make the battery annular-ish (even just divide it into three batteries arranged in a triangle) and keep it away from the hub, they have the whole wheel to play with, jeez. This is a shame, it could have been a cheap conversion kit that doesn't break.

Both images give some idea of the complexity. In bicycle engineering, there's a lot of value in simplicity. Fewer failure points, more easily detectable failure modes, and gradual failures are all features of classic bike design. Systems like this one throw that all out the window, and are much less likely to succeed as a result.
Re spokes as a heatsink, the problem is that the major source of heat is the hub motor, which is stationary, while the spokes rotate. Transferring heat between them would be difficult.

I seriously doubt that, especially the "cheap" part. There's one of those classic "pick two of three" triangles at work here: in this case complexity, reliability, and cost. To have that complexity be reliable is going to be expensive.
Btw, several other companies tried this. The FlyKly Smart Wheel (defunct), the Electron Wheel, the Evelo Omni Wheel, and the Zehus BIKE+ hub. None of them achieved "cheap conversion kit" status. Some of them, like the Zehus, were only available preinstalled by manufacturers, so their value proposition was making the manufacturer's life easier.

You mean ebikes in general? I use one to commute to work in good weather. It's 8km and I'd be quite sweaty and impresentable for my work day without electric assist. In the evening I'm happy to ride back home with minimal or zero assist as my shower's waiting for me once I arrive.

How can they be the same? One requires much more physical effort. That sounds like junk science. Perhaps they are similar type of gain but the difference in actual result must be a canyon wide.
Sure if you assume that someone switches from conventional bike to e-bikes and continues to only travel A to B like before, yes it's a net loss in exercise.
In the study however, they found lots of people substituted driving or public transport with e-bikes, which is a net gain from the reference point.
Even for people who had conventional bikes, getting a e-bikes meant travelling with e-bike more often and longer distances than with a conventional bike.

This. A quality city bike built to order by Azor or Achielle can easily cost 1300 to 2500 EUR. Non-electric.
I wonder how good the lock has to be, or the break cables and wire frames cutter resistant, for it to be worthy of leaving alone while shopping on the city centre.

Yes, but a tiny minority of bikes use those, and the product is meant to go on existing bikes. Also, even on hub-geared bikes (or single-speeds) you’d still need to switch to a longer chain or significantly move the rear wheel to be able to mount the powered sprocket in the right place, so that it wouldn’t skip.

Simple. There is this thing in psychology called "Cognitive Load". Automatic transmissions and continuous transmissions reduce it. Removing a rear rack is a few minutes with a screwdriver. I have my stuff in a rucksack. Good to point out, but will not stop most users I imagine.
The point of a rear rack is to use it, it's not there for style points.
