I see. I think part of the reason why I don't see this (or don't remember it?) is I treat my work computer differently than my home computer. For my work computer, I honestly only restart my Mac maybe once every few months and never install updates. By the time I'm 1-2 OS releases out (usually when the battery starts to fail), my company gives me the latest macbook.

For the people in the office who use Windows they start dropping off randomly during the day as their computer decides to start installing updates during critical times.

Yeah, it's the file streaming one I used to use. My use case was storing my photography collection on it. Combined with lightroom, it was terrible.

For random documents, it worked well enough. But, for that use case, I never had any issue with iCloud nor OneDrive.

I never use iCloud for massive quantities, but OneDrive would also crap out when syncing many large files (I used it as a backup for my camera while travelling earlier this year). Attempting to work with Lightroom out of that would also have it randomly stop syncing (I had checked "keep files on this device" or similar so LR always had local copies).

I think you're missing the point. There are plenty of better backup solutions for windows, and the vast majority of them are not Microsoft products.

IMHO Linux Mint keeps being the strongest option to recommend when the intention is a clean transition with the least amount of fiddling. It just works, it is reliable, and it doesn't play games with changes of basic technologies that can only cause confusion (e.g. none of the Ubuntu shenanigans like their confusing desktop or their non-Debian packaging)

I’ve had good luck with Devuan. It works a bit better than Debian / Ubuntu did during their heydays.

If you like systemd, then I can offer no advice that will help you. :-)

The only, as per personal exp, way to properly setup a Win11 machine these days is strictly via LTSC release and WinUtil from Chris Titus + local account - clean and no "feature" updates for almost 10 yrs. Why Chocolatey and not WinGet?

I started out with WinGet but found the coverage lacking and ended up sideloading stuff which then soured the whole thing for me.. Choco basically has better coverage in my experience.

Windows allows third-party software (e.g., Stardock's suite of programs) to customize its GUI.

Linux has such customization options built in (e.g., Gnome/KDE GUI settings).

I couldn't find such third-party apps or inbuilt options for MacOS for my Mac Mini 2012. It's one of the reasons I stopped using the Mac Mini, but the main reason is that Apple made it too hard to swap the old HDD in the Mini to a new SSD I could purchase, and the Apple service center guys refused to do such upgrade even when I offered to pay them extra for it. There are YouTube DIY videos to do such SSD and RAM upgrade for the Mac Mini, but I was scared to brick the Mini attempting to do such upgrade myself.

From what I can tell, AHK can’t do (m)any of the cool things that KM does, like “Click at Found Image”, “Set the Find Pasteboard”, “Prompt for Screen Rectangle”, “Stream Deck Show OK”, “Increase Song Rating by Half a Star”, “OCR Image/Screen”, “Paste from Named Clipboard”, or many other useful actions. Is there any Windows or Linux application that can?

Thank you, good to know AHK is able to do part of what Keyboard Maestro can, it just requires more work and troubleshooting for every script/macro.

That example script also doesn’t let you simply drag a marquee selection to choose the image to find, you have to provide a file path to an image that already exists. That’s not

There must be a market for something more user friendly, at least on Windows.
