The /s is missing. If you were serious, please check what backup means. I would hate to see you here, in a couple of years, with "Ask HN: Apple closed account without warning. How do i recover my iCloud photos ?"

That the workflow could be better does not really excuse the software corrupting the images. This is like the "you are holding it wrong" type excuse.

This bug is clearly Apple's fault, but no matter which software or OS you switch to, you'll encounter a bug eventually and you'll be glad to have a workflow that is resilient to that.

With Microsoft, you have to be very creative.

Yeah, seconded. For all cameras of all brands, pop the SD card out and into a reliable reader (I recommend Lexar and Sony hubs). Never use the camera over USB, the experience is terrible on everything from Canon to Sony to Panasonic to Fuji. Don't fight it, just buy that $30 USB hub and get on with your day.

This may be a varying mileage kind of situation. I have an OM1 and basically only ever transferred pictures with the camera's connection. I don't have the fastest SD cards, and the transfer speed I get is the same as my dedicated Sandisk SD card reader, around 100 MB/s.

My older camera only had a usb 2 connection over a special connector, so I used to pop out the card. But the OM1 can also charge the battery via the usb-c connection, so it's an all-round great experience: I don't have to fiddle with random parts, not forget to put them back in, etc.

Never had a single image corrupted among dozens of thousands of them. Funnily enough, my older camera used to complain about the SD card every other time after plugging it into my mac. It would shut up after a format. That card is still going strong.

I transfer the files with lightroom (but don't remove them from the card) on a windows pc.

I use Lightroom, but always with this workflow (copy files from memory card to disk, then use LR to do the import / move / build previews). If nothing else, it lets you get your card back much more quickly, as a file-system copy runs at ~1500MBps, which makes a difference when importing 50-100GB of photos. I also don't delete the images off the memory card until they've been backed up from the disk to some additional…

I haven't tried super fast memory cards, but with why I have, importing by copying from the card maxes out the card (~100 MB/s). Bonus points for the preview generation starting while the copy is ongoing.

They're actually the usual hedges you'll see. Hell, even some mice will say to not plug them into a USB hub.

It is believed that the bug was ignored or deemed unimportant or worse because of apples preference for users purchasing music via their store, yes.

People should stop using the Photos app. It is an application designed to lock you in first, make your life hard second, and manage your photos a far third. If photos are important to you, you should never ever put the master copies in an opaquely-managed proprietary container. It prevents you from auditing your files easily, it also prevents you from making backups in other media. Photos isn't even useful; leaving the photos as files allows you to pick multiple tools to manage them better.

I still use Macs because data on a physical disk seems perfectly reliable, but I've been bitten by so many of these bugs in their apps. iCloud files completely disappear, then reappear a day later. Apple's hardware is top class, but the software has always been lacking. The only time I've seen both in perfect synergy was when the iPod was released (and even then there was iTunes). Not even the iPhone reveal had that.

No ECC, no replaceable parts, software updates stop in a few years.

Apple's hardware is absolutely trash for anything that needs reliability. For shiny disposable entertainment use, it can be great.
