crazy take like saying kids having internet-connected devices with built-in cameras doesn't increase the probability of sexting, they could do the same with film cameras and a fax machine

AI doesn't increase the amount of data captured or the processing throughput is the difference with your cameras metaphor. As said at best it can summarise things better sometimes.

I would say AI is very much increasing the processing throughput of labeling surveillance data.

Re: Skill issue Money issue. This is not level playing ground, the field is severely tilted. The referee is bought. But you are saying: You lost fair and square, wait 4 years to have any say in what is going on. Re: THE ELECTIONS are how the public weighs in. When the choice is between Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the public's choice is meaningless. To say nothing about politicians outright shamelessly lying (e.g. Trum…

Bernie had the most money. Political campaigns get money from people using ActBlue to give them $25.

(Also, political donors are unusually engaged upper-middle-class people which means they are left of the average voter.)

Is there a term for such a recurring cycle in which speculative bubbles form, institutions and governments collaborate/collude to sustain them, and when the system finally reaches a breaking point the bubble collapses... leaving the public to absorb the losses while those responsible largely walk away with their pay and bonuses intact?

Usually just "bubble", since it's so common. This one is unusual in that the government started bailing out the AI companies last year. Usually, it waits until the bubble pops, and then starts the bail outs. That's standard operating procedure for Trump though. He did the same thing in 2016-19 with the zero interest rate policy + tax cuts even though the economy was strong. Any macroeconomics book (or NPR station dur…

Submitted "boomcession" to urban dictionary (in review)... sorry, couldn't credit you as there was no place to do so.

To play devils advocate - why should a government supplier and private company (Anthropic) and 1 man there - get to decide what an organization with elected officials can and can’t do? Dario has no idea of threats facing the US and where national security needs to go. Dario has personal views on weapons and surveillance- that’s fine but national defense tactics by their nature is something many people are uncomfortab…

Misunderstanding of what is happening. They have terms and conditions with their private property that anyone can choose to accept or decline. The DoD wants to them turn around and say these terms for a private company's contract around licensing of their private property are so egregious that the government and all government contract holders should be forced out of using any products by that company

Just have an actual, good faith conversation with a real human working there instead of fighting/making assumptions about a strawman in your head.

I'm not talking about employees, I'm talking about the CEO. The fact that employees believe it means the marketing works. Everything about your posts makes my point. Anthropic is a business and that you believe they have a serious commitment to the PBC or any of that other stuff, then you have drank the kool-aid, full stop.

Really not sure how you can reconcile that with them making decisions that got them designated a SCR.

agencies create many regulations which affect companies, with no input from congress. the ATF in 2017 banned 'bump stocks' by reclassifying them as machineguns with zero input from congress. companies and the people who work for them are subject to the state via the law and regulations. if they violate the law, the state will use violence to enforce the law, with a government entity called law enforcement and law enf…

You’re kind of losing the plot here. The original topic was whether Anthropic can set conditions on a contract with the government, which they obviously can. If Anthropic says “we won’t sell this unless you agree to X safeguards,” the DoD can either accept the terms or buy from someone else.

my point is the government/DoD/DoW/state can set conditions that it wants, and do what they want. DOD can literally invoke DPA with trump and force anthropic to sell them the product

"On October 30, 2023, President Biden invoked the Defense Production Act to "require that developers of the most powerful AI systems share their safety test results and other critical information with the U.S. government" when "developing any foundation model that poses a serious risk to national security, national economic security, or national public health."

Everything I don't like is pretty broad brush. I have only used it with the Trump regime. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ur-Fascism https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/trump-su...

Capitalism is dead. Welcome to the age of aristocracy were image and standing with power is more important than creating any value whatsoever. Lies are rewarded and action on good faith punished.

It is a shame that CEOs act like Kings and Queens and there is no accountability anymore. This concrete example is just part of a bigger trend to lie to the public and get away with it.

Yes, it has become a general use pejorative. At least in this case it's being used to refer to murderous authoritarians.
