Politics and propaganda tend to dominate national "learning", and those forces tend to escalate to prevent awareness. So not a lot of learning happens, historically ("history tends to repeat itself"; "history doesn't repeat, but it rhymes", etc)

If facts don’t work, intelligent, rational discourse and compromise don’t work, and economic pain don’t work, well, you’re out of options (at least options that can be discussed here).

Propaganda works. But it works better if the creator(s) are unethical and strongly committed. Usually the most unethical cooperate somewhat for their own gain, rather than compete.

How does this differ from the US or western Europe?

You can express that the emperor is naked in europe, without the emperor sending you to prison, thus guarantee a constant churn and renewal, that leaves behind the cherished product of science - something more truthish.

Competition allows for the ‘creative destruction’ of inefficient industries. See Tesla leapfrogging GM and the other companies. Apple and Microsoft jumping over IBM.

Stuff like that can’t happen if you have protected national giants.

Because our so-called "democracy" is working so very well in contrast?

democracy was what decided the trump presidency. It is working. The problem is the voters are pretty dumb, or fell for propaganda. Democracy isn't meant to give you the best outcome. It gives you, the voter, a way to push the gov't.

The "working" part refers to the fact that its making society better.

So far US has gotten measurably worse, while China has gotten measurably better.

The Soviets were insanely successful: From the 1920s to 1960s they raised the USSR to space age, industrialized it to become the 2nd superpower, won a world war, upgraded citizens from village huts to apartments, from being barefoot to cars and subways. What 'went wrong' was the economic war that Kennedy admn. started to starve the USSR of GDP by starting an arms and space race. The USSR did not bite the space race b…

> Yes, if your country can keep the private interests and capitalists under control. how come in your scenario, the state can do no wrong then?

Every organization can do wrong. However the state is the tool of the society, and its far better than handing things over to unaccountable, sociopathic private profiteers who stop at nothing to maximize their hoards of wealth made up of imaginary numbers that live in the voodoo-like financial system of today.

At this point all China needs to do is the gaben strategy, doing nothing while America keeps shooting itself in the foot. Trump seems to have unlimited bullet supply.

Chinas demographics are a ticking time bomb They’ve also massively overinvested in sectors like real estate But maybe if Drumpf screws up the US enough, they will be able to weather these problems Or perhaps AI will get so good it won’t matter

LOL If you believe western MSM, China has been collapsing (or on the verge of) for the last two decades. There is always some "time bomb" somewhere waiting to explode in China. Every issue in China (which country doesn't have issues?) is amplified 100 folds in western MSM. That has been going on for at least two decades. It has become a comical satire but some people still believe it. I guess it's kinda consoling to tell oneself that someone else's situation is bad when our own is going down the gutters.

What exactly are China's expansionist ambitions beyond obvious Taiwan and beef with India over the border in Tibet?

Have you heard of the South China Sea?

What about it? It's called South China Sea for a reason. BTW, many countries are disputing over parts of it, not just China.

By contrast, US has been occupying parts of Syria and Cuba. It overtly seeks to take control of Greenland. It has 800 military bases around the globe; in most cases, de facto occupying a country.

Who will buy the phones when no one is paid to produce them? The cars? The food and the clothes? Wealth keeps concentrating upward, great leaps in efficiency and throughput, but I can't see how it's a sustainable model for continued consumption growth year after year.

UBI is probably going to happen I think. But I don't think it's going to achieve much. Yes it's going to give common people some foothold, but with automation and AI I really doubt we need that many jobs, and unemployment rate is going to be high anyway. The elites are going to throw UBI as a bone and then they can do whatever they want. And that's it -- A cyberpunk future where elites can pretty much ignore the comm…

Purpose. I'm sure lots of people don't think of it as their purpose to work in factories and offices performing some routines they don't particularly enjoy but had to because they have to.

You have to think outside of this consenting slavery box. Individuals will find meaning in their lives. Volunteering is one. Learning a craft is another. Acquiring knowledge and improving oneself as a person is one too. Americans/westerners keep lecturing about "freedom" but they don't even recognize what real freedom is.

I think most MAGAs have this idea that 1) manufacturing is a good paying job and 2) if the US isn't manufacturing stuff, that means China is doing it for us, which will lead to 3) when we decide to go to war with China we will not have the industrial capacity to fight the war. In their world model, the opportunity cost of manufacturing things domestically is not considered, and certainly not the benefits of manufactu…

How does )3 work in the age of nukes? A shooting war between US-PRC is not something anyone should want.

Don't ask me, I don't believe it will happen :) I think the deterrence to war between nuclear superpowers is the idea that both sides are capable of fighting that war. China and the US both have the industrial capacity to fight against each other, so they will not fight, there's too much to lose. But in MAGA's opinion, the US is losing the industrial capacity to fight said war because US manufacturing is not as common as in the past. What they ignore is that there is a big difference between making cheap steel and making an F-35. Any country can make steel, but only the US can make an F-35.
