I haven't really started using it, but I'd like to.

I have a PDF file of every web page I've ever read/found interesting since the last century. This collection of about 70,000 files turns out to be a massive database of things I'm interested in.

I'd love to have an AI analyse this collection, and do things with it. What, exactly, I don't quite know - recommend other subjects that are similar, find aspects of the things I'm interested in that I don't know about yet, maybe even find similar sites to those found in the PDF metadata that would fill in gaps in my knowledge. Not sure yet how that will work, but I'm thinking about it regularly - usually whenever HN prompts me with Cool AI Thing of the Day™ ..

Genuine question: Is your concern primarily based on principles, or are you sincerely worried that OpenAI having access to your data could lead to practical, tangible negative consequences (beyond principles / psychological effects)?

So, are you using Google search? Your argument of "I don't trust it with my data and won't until you can self host" should apply to google search as well, no? And alternative take is that for whatever reason you've decided you didn't want to use new tools, a posteriori created an argument to justify that, and haven't realized the same argument applies to your old tools.

Maybe they are ok with Google seeing search terms but not with Google seeing their companies code.

I've been using chatgpt/gpt4 in a ways.

-Created a jupyter extension for code completion, auto commenting, and an error handling assistant. -Automated my email to auto draft responses to important emails. -Automated my email to auto summarize important received emails. -I've manually used it to create lots of documents including correspondence, marketing material, and code generation.

This is 100% why I'm watching Alpaca with more interest. I also keep thinking we're at the mainframe era of AI as a tool. For now its on some remote server, but the power will explode when its on all our devices and casually useful for everthing.

The top google search always comes with a lot of ads and other crap that you have to filter through. Also the response might not be exactly what your looking for (you might not have the same materials.) For instance you can ask chatgpt to create a practice plan that doesn’t require cones, or is focused on a certain set of skills, etc.

Just wait until sponsors start paying to have ChatGPT incept ideas into your mind. "Crucial next step is to buy some Rogaine", but significantly less obvious. Or other less obvious but highly impactful behavior modification like the algorithms used by TikTok/Instagram that push you in a certain direction or reinforce existing beliefs.
