I always enjoy conversations with cryptocurrency cognoscenti: "Ok. Assume I have some bitcoin (a bitcoin? bitcoins?). How would I exchange it for, say, a carton of milk?"

Don't get me wrong. I'm a math nerd. I think bitcoin is fascinating as a technical achievement, and hope we keep exploring the blockchain idea. However, I also know that bitcoin mania has literally affected global supply chains of computer components and inflicted a measurable exacerbation of global warming. There is a colourable argument about whether bitcoins have value, but it's very clear that bitcoin has a non-trivial cost.

The value of every currency is expressed in other currencies. How else would you do it? Are you saying there is nothing in existence which can really be considered "money" except maybe the US dollar?

The value of a currency is expressed in purchasing power. Exchange rates are prices of currencies in terms of other currencies, they don't tell us anything about purchasing power.

Horses literally put shit on the streets. Imagine replacing each car with a horse and think about the amount of poop.

Horses are also dangerous. A friend of mine lost almost all of their teeth because their horse kicked them in the face when they cleaned its hooves.

This distinction is so tiring. It's just not interesting calling something gambling as if that is supposed to be bad. Every move we make is a gamble (yes, even storing that precious cash in the bank). Money is all about opportunity cost and choosing to do nothing is just as much of a gamble as doing something like storing it in bitcoin. I feel like when people criticize games, they are often implicitly referring to the latter kind, and in that sense, it‘s often constructive criticism.

For most other topics, I'd probably agree. In the case of crypto currencies it's important to point out that you'd rather hear compelling counterarguments rather than the all too frequent "You're right but I wish you weren't" downvotes.

I'm genuinely amazed at how you're able to take such an in-depth, thoughtfully written article, and reduce it into a mere "bitcoin is a waste of time, people are gamblers".

He likely didn't read it. People have strong visceral reactions when they hear about Bitcoin - mostly because a lot of them are salty.

I guess the difference is cars are useful. What can I do with a bitcoin except hope to sell it for more USD later?

Transfer funds across borders without dealing with multi-business-day bank delays or capital controls in countries like China. Accept donations or other online transactions without relying on Visa/Mastercard.
