Hong Kong was a lost cause to begin with. With China having full sovereignity over Hong Kong and the Sino-British Joint Declaration being useless (not enforceable in practice and not even violated, at least on paper), the West could do little more about Hong Kong than about Xinjiang or Tibet.

Nobody excepts the small country to be able to withstand a full-scale invasion. The point is to make that invasion expensive enough to not be worth it.

You're not even wrong. With Taiwan being an island, any prospects of invasion are going to be bloody. Successful marine invasion are surprisingly rare in history. Usually, they are only successful because the defender could not set up a defense, or the attacker committed overwhelming resources. However, Taiwan's strategic position (it guards access to the mainland from the ocean) and the ideological accomplishment of having tied up this loose end might make it worth it. And in the event Taiwanese economy and its importance declines, it could become harder for the US to justify defending it.

You have to be clear that you're talking about developers here. For the rest of the company, MS Office may very well be essential. In particular, Excel is king for many business functions.

At the company I work for (400 people in Norway, offices in Sweden, Denmark and Romania as well) I don't know anyone who has a MS Office license.

There is a procedure to get one, but so far I don't know anyone who used it. Quite on the contrary I know one of our sales guys used to install and run Linux on his laptop.

Yes, I work and an above average technical company but we do have HR, sales etc and they aren't engineers (at least not most of them).

Modern process node designations (5nm, 3nm...) are not measurements any more, they are marketing terms. The actual measure of shrinking is a lot smaller than the name would mean to indicate, and not approaching the quantum limits as fast as it may seem.

If I recall correctly from my uni days, one of the big challenges with further shrinking the physical gates is that the parasitic capacitance on the gates becomes very hard to control, and the power consumption of the chip is directly related to that capacitance. Of course, nothing is so simple and I'm sure Intel can make some chips at very small process sizes, but at the cost of horrible yield.

The current state of the art seems to be 3D transistors (FinFETs, GAAFETs), which are one possible way to address the capacitance issue, and opens many design possibilities. It leads to other challenges though, for example heat dissipation.

Itanium underdelivered on performance both in its native mode and in x86 emulation mode. Either of them could have tanked that design by themselves, but both applied.

Are they able to even do that legally? I'm pretty sure the licensing agreement for x86 with AMD explicitly prohibited this for both parties.

Contracts and agreements can usually be dissolved if all parties agree to do so. Intel and AMD could also continue to don't change anything and basically play chicken until they both run into the ground.

Feel this piece ducks one of the most important questions - what is the future and value of x86 to Intel? For a long time x86 was one half of the moat but it feels like that moat is close to crumbling. Once that happens the value of the design part of the business will be much, much lower - especially if they have to compete with an on form AMD. Can they innovate their way out of this? Doesn't look entirely promising…

M1 has a more advanced node compared to both Intel and AMD designs. Architecture goes a long way of course.

I bet TSMC has a number of bombs planted around the most critical machines, much like Switzerland has bombs planted around most critical tunnels and bridges. Trying to grab Taiwan with force alone, even if formally successful, would mean losing its crown jewels forever.

TSMC is not really that important. It’s currently only useful for the cutting edge of CPUs, and especially for mobile phones, that can get the battery boost from using a more efficient processor. Military hardware uses CPU technology that’s 10+ years old, of which the Chinese are capable of fabricating themselves on the mainland. The stuff needs to be rugged, and likely, radiation-proofed. And besides, isn’t it easie…

Maybe TSMC is not that important for making advanced weapons. It is still important for billion-dollar markets like cell phones, cloud servers, desktop and laptop computers, etc. For instance, Apple, which happens to somehow rack in money selling computing devices, is very dependent on TSMC, without a viable replacement available now.

Historically, Thinkpads have had excellent support. My T430S is great (although definitely aging out), and apparently the new X1 Carbons still work well. Also, both Dell and Lenovo have models that come with Linux if desired, so those are probably good ones to look at.

Have used linux on thinkpads since the 90s.

Rules of thumb: - Use older thinkpads off business lease is great - stick to intel video graphics - max out the ram and upgrade storage (NVMe)
