This sucks

On the one hand - you’re happy for the entrepreneurs

On the other, every single thing I hate as a consumer happens because of lack of competition and these acquisitions that old dinosaurs use to prop themselves up

Every single one - I don’t think I’m exaggerating

Not particularly heart broken about Roku at this point, but still bugs me to see

There's no plurality on "the right" that holds the perspectives you're attributing to them. What you've stated is the pristine modern example of propaganda and is exactly why there is no healing.

Fine, "the right" is not a solid, well-defined group, and s/the right/the GOP/. What upthread wrote is practically the stated position of the GOP (as much as one can delineate the stated position, since the current platform is literally Trump-rambling style writing, complete with caps-lock style screaming…), and it's the political viewpoint, as best as one can determine, of basically all of the GOP's leadership. Insofar as the party stated that to be their platform via direct statement and the words & actions of their leader, and then set of people we might loosely refer to the collective set as "the right" proceeded to then vote for our current president, that vote becomes an endorsement of that platform.

Sure, there might be someone on "the right" who doesn't hold that view, but we're in the exception-proves-the-rule territory, or more commonly it seems these days "the leopards are eating my face".

As a long-time[1] customer of Roku I am tentatively extremely pessimistic. I have always been unhappy with Roku's decision to get involved in streaming content at all, because it could potentially cut into their service-agnostic architecture. Bad enough in my mind that they had in-platform ads instead of just charging for hardware, but way worse when they are actively competing with streaming services. And now it loo…

No different than a tech platform expanding into content. Like YouTube, Amazon and Apple. I understand your complaint, but those two worlds are intertwined beyond redemption now.

Not at all. I can feel very strongly about that, but if I feel more strongly about health care so tens of thousands of people don't die needlessly and countless millions more don't go bankrupt or get maimed from lack treatment, one is going to win over the other. That doesn't mean I don't feel strongly about it. Also, the 600,000 in Wyoming get the same two senators as the 40,000,000 people in California so it's not…

Like I said, not enough people care about it enough to push for legislation. And proportional representation is found in the House of Representatives. We have a bicameral legislature.

> not enough people care about it enough to push for legislation.

This is a just-so-story. No matter how much people care you can always say they don’t care enough when the law doesn’t match what people want - and when the law does match it’s because they cared enough, no matter how much they actually cared.

In practice, the laws don’t match what people want.

But all that aside - the laws already exist to block this acquisition, the only thing that’s missing is enforcement.

Can't skip ahead to sections of their content you want to view and instead are forced to watch it in sequence. Either that or can't skip ads, ala legal dvd playback

I'm still not seeing the part where this is Roku's fault at all. It's Amazon's app responding to the controls the way Amazon wants it. There's no platform with a standardized "fast forward" experience - Apple TV, Google TV, Fire Sticks, whatever are apps running on a device and those apps all implement their own navigation controls.

Pretty sure the big A had a problem with older versions of the OS. I'll climb way out on a limb and guess that the API for the apps didn't support embedding control codes in the stream to disable various user controls at points of the content owner's choosing. So yes, the APV app is driving whether to try to force ads on you, buy they couldn't write the app to do that prior to some version of the roku os.

To be completely cynical about it, if APV hadn't demanded the os support, I think some other party probably would have.

I never liked the idea of Roku since I always felt like they could "go away at any moment" since that is all they sold basically. Fun fact, Roku sells security cameras at Walmart, they're technically rebranded Wyze cameras (look just like them, same hardware) with Roku software on them. If you did buy one of those Roku cameras, maybe a good time to switch off to Wyze if you don't like this direction.

> rebranded Wyze cameras Is that even possible? IIRC Wyze cameras are whatever cheap Chinese OEM model thy find and can brand the firmware for. Seems as likely that Roku went to same OEM source.
