It absolutely is slower. To an extreme degree even. It takes 10 to 20 seconds to load and is incredibly sluggish to use on some low-end machines I use regularly.
I disagree that we should be optimizing for low end machines and holding back on product improvements for the 80% mass market. Technology improves, it’s one of its best traits. We don’t need to be stuck in the past.

When OpenAI fails, all the AI projects everywhere else will also be killed. Such is the nature of bubbles. With any luck the farm land where the datacenters were built will be sold back to the farmers for half off and they get a free barn out of the deal.
The AI projects that make sense will live. Capitalism is survival of the fittest. That farm land is dead and gone, best we can do is urban/rural decay.

Any large building in a rural area will be used as a barn if it has no other useful purpose. It's kind of hilarious when I pass by the old AT&T long lines facility being used as a hay barn.

I sincerely hope that OpenAI goes down in flames with those DRAM contracts are going to the highest bidder then so probably Google or whatever AI competitor. Honestly having problems remembering the other AI companies without googling it. I recall MS, Facebook, Amazon, Google, and Anthropic.

Wasn't that true with the previous incarnation of the steam machine, the valve index, steam controller, etc.? IIRC their VR gear was some of the most expensive consumer level gear on the market.
The steam deck, and now the (newer) steam machine is looking to push into the mass market of consoles, and i reckon it would be more successful. Not to mention the more mature steamOS and compatibility layer now (compared to before).
I have high hopes for it. I want PC gaming to break free of microsoft windows.

Low-end machines aren't necessarily stuck in the past. e.g. $150 minipcs that use 5W to give you a perfectly snappy desktop Linux experience.

Dotcom companies were basically stuff like pets.com, not things considered strategic with de-facto government backing.
Cisco was very much not "stuff like pets.com". Most of the money lost in the dotcom crash wasn't in pets.com, it was the infrastructure companies like Cisco and Sun.
