Labeling a legitimate question as “negative” while not really answering it is unproductive.

Um, what makes this "just asking questions"-style dig "legitimate," while my point that nobody ever asks that about any other software is dismissed as "unproductive"? If anything, slapping labels on things without giving any reason at all is what's unproductive.

I just think it goes to show how little the window management of desktop OSes has improved over the years that desktop applications have had to up the ante... I also think the differing behaviour between different apps implementing split panes (e.g. keyboard controls for creating/switching) is very annoying. Perhaps. Maybe iTerm's recent browser plugin, though useful, is a symptom of that lack of desktop UI progress.

Konqueror (KDE's original hybrid web browser/file manager) had it first, implemented in 1999 ( https://invent.kde.org/search?group_id=1551&project_id=2544&... ) and it supports arbitrary tiling. Oh by the way, Chrome's rendering engine (called blink nowadays, KHTML once) also originated from KDE.

Implementation details and UX in general is a cluster fsck of sad stories though, can confirm. Try/adapt zen browser maybe?

And that konqueror, KDE's web browser, added in 1999 (and still supports). Also, it's still a great browser, albeit still missing webext support.
