I think the OVH datacenter was also built of wood and right next to another "independent" datacenter which also burned down when the fire spread. OVH is about cheap, not quality. Like hetzner they come from the vps/hosting end of the market which is all about cutting corners, packing vms, overselling, etc. Very much the cowboy end of the market.

And I will say again, we couldn’t get insurance without the halon system.

Nope. OVH Groupe is a separate VPS (and an extremely large one) based in France and Poland. I've always wondered how these types of "waived" accounts are coded in the backend. Are there flags in a table (i.e. first class support) or is it hacked together with duct tape? Seems like OVH is using the latter solution.

Sounds like 'prepaid balance transferred by accounting and manually entered into DB', which is then consumed slowly until outage.

As someone who's been around the block for affordable hosting providers, OVH was one of those that never really impressed. They never had any major downtime for me, but micro-outages, blips... things like that were common. Support was fine. In time I migrated off in search of better stability. Overall my gold standard is still Hetzner or DO for easy-to-use, affordable VPS/hosting options.

Hetzner is the most unintuitive UI / service I've ever used.

DO is amazing. Easy to use and clean

Too bad they stopped investing in new equipment around the time they IPOd in 2021.

As near as I can tell, the newest "premium" CPU you can get from them is a ~2021 era Xeon. The shared and "regular" CPUs are even older.

(I don't know anything about pandas, incidentaly, I just did some basic research before posting.)

Both of those are statically served
