I can only speak for myself. If the news article has anything to do with tech and things "interesting to hackers", I upvote. For example, the article about Palantir and ICE yesterday [1]. But articles like this one have nothing interesting to me. There are plenty of other places to discuss this like BlueSky, X, reddit, Facebook, etc. I beg you to please spare this last interesting forum. Also it pisses me off how nob…

The promise made was that they were going after "bad people", e.g., murderers, rapists, etc. I don't think many people have a problem with that. But that's not who they're going after, it's everybody , with a focus on ethnic cleansing . It is no longer hyperbole to compare what's happening now to Germany in the 1930's.

This is not yet something most Americans have caught onto. The DHS made a tweet fantasizing about deporting 100 million Americans (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/dhs-100-million-deportations-...) - which is roughly what deporting all non white people would look like. And Elon Musk posts white supremacist content daily - and I mean this literally. For example he called for “white solidarity” (https://people.com/elon-musk-shares-startling-post-endorsing...) and has also repeatedly called for remigration which is literally defined as “ethnic cleansing” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remigration).

But who holds them accountable? The DOJ right? Is that who can pursue a case against government officials violating constitutional rights? If so, it’s not enough. We need a rethink of checks and balances. This was clear even after the first Trump administration but we’re well past that now, and in this first year the second Trump administration has conducted a lot more violations.

Sadly, it seems clear at this point it is going to fall to the citizens of these states united to hold them to account.

I sort of feel like they will keep doing things repeatedly to make it seem normal and get their base to support it. As long as they stay “ahead” of the people that way, is there real hope that citizens can hold them to account? My only idea here, which I see more people talking about, is making a general strike happen in all the major cities.

The administration labelled "the left" domestic terrorists, while promoting and pardoning domestic terrorism. There needs to be serious accountability when the Democrats retake power.

I keep telling myself America isn't 1930s Germany, that the guardrails of this democracy will hold, and if they don't, enough of the people will rise up and put a stop to this. That the military won't go along with firing on it's own citizens when and if given that order. That there is some sort of line even for Republicans and the Pentagon that can't be crossed without the current regime will be removed one way or another.

I was brutalized by DHS/CBP when Biden was in power, they won't do shit, and even worse when it happened not even the leftists gave a damn and even on places like HN people suggested I deserved it. No one gave a single shit about my story about being brutalized by DHS until Trump came into power, up until that moment only my own family would believe it. I remember telling the exact damn story on HN pre-and post trump -- post trump I got hundreds of upvotes and pre trump when it actually happened it was almost all people suggesting I deserved it and that I wasn't "telling the facts."

There will be zero accountability because the Democrats also need the help of those manning the federal machinery to implement their own programs. Even if they might be using it for far less reprehensible things. Civil service reform assures us of that -- it's almost impossible to fire most civil servants so best to just negotiate to overlook misdeeds in exchange for them implementing your campaign promises.

Given the administration is openly talking about not having elections, I am not sure it can. I am guessing all this chatter about the insurrection act is itself a cover to not have midterms. Will that be enough to spark mass protests and general strikes? I am not sure. I genuinely think the ability for massively violating acts to be normalized quickly is unprecedented. Anything is possible.

There must be a serious bombshell in those Epstein files if he's doing this to prevent release (anyone else notice it's all paused - again) ?

I saw an article about a witness to a snuff film, and he implicated Trump. Or that Trump was present when a newborn was thrown out of a boat (Trump's "post birth abortion").

It's pretty bad already.

I don't agree. They're not stupid and they're out to give advantages to themselves. More money, more power, more ... and these actions, especially if justified like you do, will absolutely fail at that.

If the US as a whole becomes poorer, being a billionaire will mean a lot less.

I mean I agree they're lacking in empathy, right. But this is not a cartoon. Lacking in empathy is not a goal in itself for these people. It's just not.
