There are literal kids (teenagers) making 6 figures a month from their Youtube channels with absolute 0 production costs. The best example would be a guy called Pewdiepie[1], he makes gaming videos and does something like 5 million views per day (which is probably around $10k revenue assuming he has a good deal...). He isn't alone, there's quite a few others approaching his level of success. Something a lot of people…

There is also the fact that this is only ad revenue. I would wager that people with good marketing skills make much more from side gigs than from direct ad revenue.

From what I've noticed on many of the top YouTube channels I subscribe to, many have merch to sell and other side projects that earn them a little more money.

Not to mention that several producers have multiple channels, where they use the success of a single channel to make their subsequent channels just as successful.

That's not true, only if the distribution in both directions is exponential, which is not the case here. The horizontal scale is just the rank, which is linear.

The parent is correct, the claimed relationship being y ~ rank^a for some a x) and look for power law tails.

You clearly don't know the difference between exponential and polynomial relationship.

    rank^a is polynomial.

    a^rank is exponential.
The data is neither (unless you can demonstrate it with the actual formula).

I don't really have time to do this because I'm supposed to be working on a paper about, wait for it, power laws, but I went ahead and re-plotted the data using log-log axes. Sure enough, it's linear as would be expected for power law type behavior:

Well of course, pretty much any data looks linear on a log-log chart.

The real question here is what the formula is between the rank and the number of views. You absolutely cannot derive it from the log-log chart.

My point from the beginning is that it's not a power law (y=c*a^bx, where y = views, x = rank and the rest is constants).

I recently got an email from youtube suggesting that I monetize my channel as they'd noticed that one of my videos was becoming quite popular. It's had about 500 (five hundred) views after 4 years! How much would I make?

If you got the average eCPM that these numbers indicate ($2) then you'd make about $1 for 500 views; could be more, could be less (CPM = cost per thousand)
