Why do this when you can get an identical picture from photoshop?
It gives it character and helps ensure you'll get good artists to work on it. Though now I wish they'd made that clear by making the intermediate shots desktop defaults.

You're not wrong, but the production team might be more justified when you account for the huge number of users seeing this image. Would a synthetic image sufficed? Yes. Can it be worth it to invest in artists creating something nice if millions of people see it? Yes.
To me as a photographer and as computer vision expert, this sounds wayyyyyy over-engineered and -produced. I get that there's a big vision (and budget) involved, but c'mon!

That's like saying why should anyone at all make music, art, hire actors, etc., when A.I. will be able to do all of these tasks identically over the next couple years (partially already). The human element is important. Because we're humans.
