The last psychiatrist has written a lot about that. He calls it modern narcissism, and uses it to explain a lot of what we call depression today. There's also the Christian notion of acedia, the ancester of sloth, that is not just laziness, but a moral failure due to selfishness and being self centered, and thus not doing things for others. I of course won't go around accusing eveyone that's depressed of selfishness…
