They rarely catch fire, but ICE cars catching fire while parked is even more rare. Plus EV fires are significantly more catastrophic. I also think banning EVs would be stupid, but we need to be serious about having the proper infrastructure to support them and nobody is talking about it. I don't want an EV within 50 yards of my house or really any other indoor structure. They should be required to be parked outdoors…

You make a lot of bold claims with no evidence. Good thing I guess that you don't get to dictate federal policy, which is moving in the opposite direction.

    But where a normal car fire takes about 500 gallons of water, essentially 1 truckload, this fire took 28,000 gallons. That’s the equivalent of 56 fire trucks.

    In this case, there was a hydrant nearby. But without that, firefighters would have had to shuttle in water.

    “As it ended up, we were there for four hours putting water on the car and we continue to have what’s called thermal runaway with the battery packs,” Buck said.

    Thermal runaway is what happens when different battery cells under the car keep igniting.

    That’s a basic difference too. Water needs to get underneath the car where the battery cells are located.

    Firefighters in the Netherlands even tried using a crane to dunk a BMW hybrid in a pool of water to stop the thermal runaway and put out the fire.
It's also worth noting that hybrid vehicles actually catch fire at a higher rate than ICE cars...It's likely that plug-in electric hybrids are being counted in hybrid fire statistics instead of EV.

Considering that Tesla is moving to LFP batteries which are much safer and less likely to catch fire and I think other auto makers are expected to follow. I would not be surprised if this is a none issue in a year or two. Are there any shipping cars using LFP batteries yet?

LFP increasing density (200 wh/kg in 2022 according to CATL roadmap, 230 in 2023) is coming, but it's just the short range Model 3 that is feasible with LFP in the current state.

All the sexy models (S, X, LR version, CT, etc) will be NMC for at least 2 years I'd guess.

The 230 wh/kg LFP cells will probably be better than the 260 wh/kg NMC cells since pack level there's less cooling/safety needed. So if 2023 230 density is achieved, then we can talk.

Solid state continues to be a nothingburger. It's strange that the Quantumscape 10 layer demo was such a news dud, which tells me that the major problems of scale and cost are still in prototype.

This is standard fare for condo associations. These are almost always chock full of old crotchety rules lawyers that undoubtedly don't want their association dues to increase one red cent just because some whippernsapper dogooder lazy millenial wants this. I mean, alternatively old crotchety people don't care about resale value because they won't have to move to chase a job or follow a partner who needs to move.

I'm confused about the argument regarding the sprinkler system. I can understand water sprinkler being a dangerous combination with a battery fire. But for a gasoline powered car, isn't a fire likely to be a flammable liquid fire, for which water sprinklers are also a dangerous choice?

Have you ever seen what happens when a chemical fire is sprinkled with water? It's basically the same thing as trying to extinguish a cooking oil fire with a glass of water, you'll make it even worse.
