You could generate hash on device, send it to server alongside the file, once validated delete hash or create decoding voucher.

Apple doesn’t scan iCloud for CSAM and refuses to do it. Which is why they researched intensively on differential privacy.

The problem I have with this approach is that it introduces on-device scan for images. All what is needed to adopt it to scan for different kind of images is to connect it to different database, say, Winnie the Pooh memes featuring CCP chairman, and boom, jailed dissenters. And ability to scan all images is but a minor firmware update away.

Server scanning makes it clear that the company running the servers has access to your photos. So you can either find a form of encrypted storage, or be okay with that, depending on your privacy stance. Having device with ability to scan your photos removes that choice. It is a privacy invasion.

I believe it has a good chance of failing on level of different EU states. Just try telling a general German citizen that their private communications must be monitored.

HN community was extremely avid about using big tech to stifle its political opponents based entirely on privacy-invading metadata collection over the last four years. They even bent over backwards with a mass addiction to the "Private companies can censor anyone they want" meme. They applauded it every step of the way.

Now that the same tech will be applied to HN's child porn stash, all of a sudden, invasions of privacy are the grand evil.

You people deserve the very worst of what big tech has to offer.

Why Graphene instead of Calyx? The later seems to be more user friendly (asking because i'm looking into it)

'Child Safety' is extremely disingenuous. Their 'plan' provides no benefit to the safety of children and only strips users of their remaining shred of privacy. Authorities care more about stopping images than actual children currently being abused (lack of investigation into Sophie Long allegations). Of course this is because 'child safety' is merely a smokescreen for authoritarianism and tyranny. Just like China.

If this technology is that easily circumvented then why is there an expectation that it will be effective at all?

It isn’t being circumvented. It is intended to work on photos that are uploaded to iCloud. If you don’t use that (via turning it off or via selling everything Apple and switching to Linux) then you aren’t using it.

Pixel4 with LineageOS (Non google apps) F-Droid and Nextcloud for Backup and sync....grass is rosy for me ;)
