I hate to say it but this SSD story has been plastered all over the news by the PR machine, mainly because the new consoles have no other inovations whatsoever.... No, it is not going to usher a new area of gaming, just make game have less 'loading' screens, and perhaps larger open worlds.... but it is no near the innovation and changes we experiences in the 90s and early 2000's.... Let me say in a more popular langu…

If Tim Sweeney says it’s a game changer I’m gonna say it’s probably a game changer.

You can tell someone hasn't watched the Ratchet & Clank demo from the other day[0]. The SSDs in these consoles go far beyond short load times. They can radically change how games are made and designed. [0] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsnG-3-r6-Q

This article didn't talk deep enough about PS5 custom storage chip controller or I missed it. Reference: 1. https://youtu.be/4ehDRCE1Z38?t=480 2. https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1205112-i%E2%80%99ve-di...

I think you may have failed to notice that there's more than one page to this article. Page 1 covers the SSD hardware itself, and page 2 covers the other storage-related hardware that's not actually on the SSD itself.

I really failed to notice that, yea they did talk about it in other pages

Earlier quoted context omitted.

Playstation 5 doesn't swap out the SSD, it's an additional slot for a PCI-E nvme SSD. The onboard SSD that comes with it doesn't seem to be removable.

Ah yes, I misremembered: there's an additional slot but a very specific spec requirement. They'll be whitelisting individual devices.

I don't think it's been confirmed whether they'll be enforcing a whitelist, or merely publishing a list of drives that have been verified to be compatible. The latter seems more likely to me, simply due to the sheer volume of SSD models that will meet the technical requirements. (Especially where we'll see a dozen or more brands selling the same hardware with a different label.)

That portal transition effect likely hides the load screen - it's still there, nearly half a second, it's just shorter. This is comparable to current load times with an SSD on PC!

The N64 looked way better, loaded faster, had a better controller, and to me had a better game library as a whole. The PS1 had comparatively horrible architectural choices like no built-in z-buffer, texture filtering, or floating point processing. Apparently N64 sold less per year available though. What did everyone see in the PS1?

I seem to recall PS1 games being cheaper than N64 games which allowed kids to purchase more. Allowances in the 90s were on average between 5-20/wk. PS1 games were more like $40 compared to N64 games which were usually $60.

They need to change the title. It's an absolute disgrace to make fun of today's moment. Please share https://twitter.com/Zedmor/status/1271637729646915585

You are outraged and your solution is to try to get people to share your own twitter saying you outraged?

The PS1 also had much more memory available for texture data - there was a set of trade offs for both consoles. Personally I loved both - but the PS1 turned out some really impressive game’s that weren’t possible on the N64 (at least not without looking like blurry messes) even discounting the benefits a CD-ROM had for storing large amounts of data.

Yes, gamers don't give a toss about the tech details [0], and they shouldn't, Sony gave a presentation about all of the internals of the PS5 and all they got in response was "ZZzzZZZZZZ". They only want the console for the games, man, nothing else. [0] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ph8LyNIT9sg

This was actually a really awesome presentation. I don't think the intended audience was their customers, perhaps more for the media & gamedevs.

It's about time. SSDs have been around a very long time, and without a supported way of swapping out the internal hard drive, console gamers are penalized with long waits vs PCs where SSDs have become fairly standard.

PS4s have been able to swap out their hard drive and it's fully supported. However, base model PS4s run it at SATA2 speeds no matter what's attached, with SATA3 only being supported on the Pro.
