How is this relevant to Hacker News? > If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

> On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity. A lot of people here like a) the nerdiness of Tesla, and b) the stock market's reactions to it.

In what way does Tesla’s stock price gratify intellectual curiosity today?

Does today’s change in price materially improve or worsen Tesla’s product, ability to manufacture product, and/or cost of Tesla vehicles or feature options?

Should I post to the front page each time Microsoft stock goes up? IBM? Bitcoin? Should I restrict such posts to stock prices that are powers of 2, so that it’s intellectually curious when it would not otherwise be?

You haven’t made a case that Tesla’s share price is intellectually curious in any respect yet, and that’s my still-unanswered question to you:

Why is today’s share price increase specifically relevant to HN?

if your the market leader without competition on a large addressable market your valuation can essentially be infinite. But most stock trades are being driven now by low interest rates once interest rates become more sensible , we should see more sanity. but thats only half the story, low interest rates just create insane price pressure , there can be lot of +/- ve price pressure. The people on wall street have concl…

but, will interest rates ever become more reasonable again? the US fed and the feds across the world seem to be hell-bent on creating very high inflation. even now that we've had 2.1 and 2.4% inflation, apparrently that's not high enough even though they're supposed to keep it at 2.

"new paradigm"

"this time it's different"

Everyone is very impressed that the low rates seem to not being doing what they're 'supposed' to, but that's a long way away from eternal low rates.

Valuations should still be important. Given that Tesla has almost doubled in 5 trading days, that should be considered a significant event.

xkjkls gave a great answer, but does it matter? If the HN crowd upvoted it to the front page then enough people thought it was a valid topic that warranted some discussion.

I do often see posts in new that have 40+ upvotes and were flagged as soon as they reached the front page, so I don't take anything for granted.

No way to know. $900 seems high but people though $40 was high too a few years ago. No one knows until it's over.

At $40 it was a question of valuation. At $900 it's overvalued, 98% of even tesla owners (like me) would agree. They have a fantastic future, their technology is world leading. The company even seems to be thriving. Remember the real goal is pull the other auto companies along in their wake to make more sustainable electric cars. They actually seem to be doing it. Let's see how it seems in another few years when ever…

That's how the current short-sellers have gotten themselves in trouble. They all thought that the stock was overvalued. It may be overvalued but there are enough buyers that are willing to bet that the stock can still go up.

This is a stock that gets traded on things other than current value or even future value.

This stock was at $215 less than 6 months ago. Wow....

This is a short squeeze. The people that shorted the stock are buying the stock to close their position and forcing the stock up. This has happened with Tesla before. The stock went from the 40s to over 100 in a very short time and never looked back. The stock will find a top and collapse a bit. But the stock price will end up higher than when it started the run. Those that shorted the stock before the run will never…

As someone who was looking into the stock somewhat seriously way back then, I'll offer an alternative story. That was their first "profitable" quarter, for which they cashed in a bunch of single-use accounting gimmicks. The part that taught me the most at the time was that they then rapidly leveraged that huge rise to issue debt/equity at the new valuation. That cash infusion all but cemented what otherwise would've…

You have a good point. Companies often use a stocks run up to issue new stock. Many have all the paperwork done so they are ready to issue the stock in no time once they decide to do it. Tesla needs a lot of capital to produce their cars. I bet we'll be hearing about a new stock issue relatively soon.
