Yes. And that's the proposal that doesn't give anyone access to identifiable information. Well, in California it's not a proposal, it's the law.

It also doesn't give any actual age verification information. Verified age is not the same thing as self reported age. If a kid can figure out how to click "yes, I am an adult" on a website, they can definitely figure out how to do the same thing when they turn on their phone the first time.

You can get alcohol with a fake ID, too

Yes. Which entails document fraud, expense and pretty significant risk of failure. No system is perfect, but a fake id is very different than the clerk just asking everyone how old they are and calling it good.

You really cant see the difference between checking an id and asking someone their age?

The point is that asking is completely pointless when lying is free and impossible to detect. You need some way to verify truth, and that necessarily entails exposing PII somewhere in the process.

All California accomplished was to add an api for exposing self reported age. That is very different than actually knowing a customer’s age. Any liquor store can tell you.

The UK can’t block Dissent [1] since it looks like normal HTTPS traffic. [1] https://godissent.com

> The site’s content happens to include an HTTP/2 endpoint that, when presented with an anonymous authorization token, behaves as a VPN server’s outer layer Is this not the fingerprintable aspect? Wouldn't you need to randomise the HTTP endpoint to avoid eventually being banned based on URI? Cool idea btw.

For a URI ban would that have to be through ISPs? If so, then alternative DNS would be an easy work around.

You've already surrendered your privacy to Meta, sure, this has nothing to do with Meta. This is your VPN, the one thing you use because you don't trust your ISP or the wifi you're on, now wanting your real ID before it works. A kid doesn't even need a VPN to doomscroll on school wifi anyway. And "let adults radicalize themselves, their choice" is rich when those adults vote and raise kids and show up swinging at sch…

You're lost. The whole basis of this discussion is that is that certain services (porn, social media) will have to AV. A kid having open network access doesn't help because they still have that interface to overcome. Services that enable circumvention is a natural extension. Yes that means going through the same verification process you do with pornhub with your VPN host. Completely by-the-by, your school networking…

Pornhub checking my ID is pornhub's problem, not my ISP's, not my VPN's, not every other site I visit through it. A VPN isn't a porn bypass tool that happens to also do other things, it's infrastructure I run my whole connection through, and you want it gated because one of the things people use infrastructure for is something you don't like. That's not a natural extension, that's just deciding the tool itself is guilty by association.

And thanks for confirming kids can absolutely get around your locked down network, you're just betting they won't bother. So the actual plan is "trust kids not to circumvent it" for school wifi but "can't trust adults not to circumvent it" for VPNs. Pick a level of trust and stick with it.

I mean - EU nationals are not a part of the UK so why would they be able to vote on things in the UK? French people don't vote in UK elections, as far as I understand it.

They pay taxes, serve in local bodies, work in the government organise events, own properties and companies, send their children to schools, etc, etc. Are you suggesting they do not belong or that they do not have the best interest of the communities in mind? Living here sometimes for decades, committing to their chosen home. Thankfully they can vote in local elections, and I don't think there's suggestion in the UK…

it's just very confusing to me that immigrants from the EU might get more rights (voting) than immigrants from, for example, Japan if neither group had become UK citizens since brexit

Ah, I thought you're singling EU citizens out.

To the best of my knowledge there's no difference as of now. These lies from the pledge were probably the way to get the EU countries more sympathetic to his hostile EU cooperation attitude (how Starmer didn't get a schizophrenia from all these entirely opposite stances is beyond me).

And then UK residents are going to discover the "power" of government which will require age verification for renting a VPS or VDS or any other kind of cloud infrastructure, tied directly to your passport/ID, because "many families are desperate for this to happen and I listen particularly to bereaved families that say the longer we delay this, the more children are put at risk". /j or /s P.S. by the way, is it possi…

Now that (abandoning the efforts to block Tor so now it mostly works) sounds like some good news to me! Can you please share your settings or what exactly you use that works for you? Perhaps they will help my friends, too, because previously, they relied on Tor to circumvent the "network blockade", but it just stopped working for them at some point. And yes, they tried to play with settings as well but it didn't real…

I use bridging. Not going to disclose the address, sorry. I had to try several bridges obtained via Tor itself and via telegram before one worked.

Well, that makes some sense. My friends tried some bridges as well, but some of them didn't work from the beginning, while others got blocked (probably; the exact reason why they don't work anymore is unknown) later.

Come iToddlers and the Samstung, Pixel [soon Motorola] with GrapheneOS is the way!

I'm writing it from GoS device, CC can be accessed by the apps. There's plenty on the roadmap from what I see, although this phone is infinitely better than with the standard OS.

The article below sharply summarizes why all this is a dystopian surveillance setup: > how, precisely, do you stop a fourteen-year-old from opening Instagram without first checking the age of the forty-year-old? > You don’t. You can’t. So everyone gets carded. Britain is lifting the system wholesale from Australia, where a computer first scans your face and guesses your age from your cheekbones, then, failing that, s…

> You don’t. You can’t. So everyone gets carded. Exactly. A little at a time. First it's adult sites, because if you need to show ID to buy alcohol, shouldn't you need ID to buy pornography? Once that's accepted, expand the sphere of control to non-adult sites too by redefining everything as 16+.

I can assure you it will be much faster than that.
