Are you making the argument that an extinction level meteor event is within the same realm as Apple deciding to lock down their hardware? It is called risk management, here is how it goes: The likelyhood that an earth ending meteor comes and destroys the earth is very very low and therefore Debian decides that they should still write software. On the other hand the likelyhood that Apple -- a for profit company -- loc…

If you don’t think a for profit hardware company which also makes operating systems will never think about making it so only their software can run on their hardware, I don’t know what to say to you. They already do this with iphone/ios. It is possible they do with mac/osx. Im not saying it is guaranteed, I am saying it is possible. And I am also saying it is much more possible than a meteor wipes us out in my lifetime. If you disagree with that, fine.

I am pretty sure I will be vindicated by Asahi never being relevant.

I have installed different Linux distros in 4-5 devices in the last year, including a laptop with an Nvidia GPU and a random NUC off Aliexpress. In all cases everything worked out of the box after a fresh installation--and as far as I remember the situation was the same ~10 years ago, when I first started using it. There are hiccups here and there, but nothing I cannot live with. I do tech support for my girlfriend'd…

I can only speak from personal experience. But I've had multiple Lenovo laptops not work with Ubuntun or nixOS in multiple situations. Any new yoga variants just always had trouble. E.g. my yoga slim 7i had a keyboard issue in Ubuntu such that for the first minute, I can't use my keyboard. Had to change boot configbto use "dumb keyboard" or something The yoga also had speaker issues in nixos as the drivers haven't be…

Laptops notoriously have rare hardware with poor or non-existent drivers. For laptops, you do need to do research with Linux to make sure things outside of the CPU/GPU work.

And, of course macs work first try. Apple makes both the hardware and software, if it didn't work it would be extremely impressive. The fact it's working is expected, not exceptional or noteworthy.

Yes, using an Nvidia GPU is absolutely failing to hold it right. Nvidia has shit support on Linux and they do it intentionally, everybody knows that.

You can blame Linux all you want but there's nothing anybody can do except Nvidia. The whole thing is locked down, no distro or developer on Earth can save Nvidia users.

Honestly, knowing what I know about marcan, the decision was probably the result of an overwhelming/strong emotional reaction. Not to just shit all over him or anything, but it really sucks to see someone who is genuinely top-ten-on-earth when it comes to "real hacking" struggle so much with socialisation and mental health.

It is weird to blame the victim for reacting to being harassed by a mob. That is a normal thing to have a reaction to. Perhaps rather than blaming people's social skills and mental health, we should instead blame the culture that normalises harassing people on the internet, even to the point of suicide (as happened in byuu's case). You are basically advocating that it is better for individuals to change to accept a s…

Marcan was clearly mentally unwell. He delusionally thought there was some harassment mob after him. After the fallout with Linux kernel devs, the lolipedo accusations, and him being outed as the vtuber Asahi Lina, he arguably did the correct thing: deleted every social media account and abandoned Asahi Linux. I hope he stepped away from screens and spent some time outdoors.

They launched this platform with those restrictions, they didn't add them after the fact.

It's statistically less probable than a meteor wiping life on Earth - so my point stands that that Asahi team would be more concerned with a rogue orbital than it needs to be about Apple locking down the Mac ecosystem.
