Apps like that often contain (many?) short high resolution videos to show how to do an initial connection or something that can take up a ton of space. Gmail has no such excuse.
800 MB High resolution video explaining how to connect a microphone is still bonkers. There's no justifying this garbage.
I’m not saying it’s a smart use of space. Just that it absolutely happens.

There's a few other apps that are ridiculously big. Like the DJI Mimo app. It's an app I need for my DJI Mic, to change 4 settings on it. It needs 800MB for that which is absolutely ridiculous. Also I need to sign up for an account to use it even though the Mic works completely locally and it just changes the settings over USB. OS startup? AOT compilation happens in the build pipeline, before the app is distributed.
AOT is unique because you want to compile it with all the capabilities your device has, so there still has to be some complication done, especially when you have processors that have brand new instructions to make operations significantly more efficient.
That's not the approach they're referring to, iOS doesn't support that. They're referring to delivering the compiled native code as part of the app package.

For what it's worth, Outlook for iOS on my iPhone has an executable that weighs in at 368.8 MB. Google needs to trim some stuff down.
Apple Mail on macOS is 16-30MB, so something is still clearly of.
To be fair, Apple is the only developer in the world that can ship (cross-app) shared libraries on iOS, so they have a bit of an advantage.

#387The real reason is Google has no incentive to make it smaller. In fact there is incentive to make it bigger. If your phone runs out of space you need to get a new phone with more memory, or move pictures and the like to the cloud, both of which are good news for Google. So why spend any effort keeping the size down.

Very insightful, rather than unjustified speculation. Of course it doesn’t explain why many other apps are so big, e.g. Withings, Bunq (bank), and Albert Heijn (supermarket) together eat 1GB of my storage. All 3 are things I need to list data, but somehow are the size they are.
But this is still unjustified speculation
GP offered one plausible explanation and backed it up with credible points. They’ve done more than the linked blog post which has no explanation to offer.

What about their comment is credible? They brought up possible points, borderline likely points, but it carries no ethos. No app decompiling, no build system analysis. I'm just not seeing what you're seeing
