Right, but I don’t think a x2 slot exists so hence being physically a x4 card. If you had an open ended x1 slot you might be able to run as PCIe v4 x1.

Jeff: I see a possible problem with your tests that bit me before! ipferf3 is not multithreaded by default. The more capable computers probably have an interrupt rate sufficient to handle 10gig over USB (which likely multiplies the interrupt rate needed), but it's completely possible you're pushing the interrupt rate limits on the Macbook Neo and other lower powered hardware. I ran all the tests at P 2 and P 4 to verify cpu cores weren't hindering the speed, but got the same result (within 2%). Modern A/M cores and Zen 5 cores individually have enough grunt to handle at least 10 Gbps through USB without a hitch. On my Pi's and N100 mini PCs, I do have to use threads to hit more than about 5-6 Gbps. And testing a 25 Gbps adapter I'm testing separately, I had to use multiple threads to get…

Awesome! We had a Intel Atom board with 10g, and we could never get iperf3 to saturate the interface until we used `-P`!

The problem with fibre isn't the sensitivity. It's that most endpoints have a 1Gbps copper port on them and then Cat6A ports can be used with the common devices but also allow you to add or relocate 10Gbps devices without rewiring the building again.

In practice though 10G via copper requires pretty perfect terminations. The slightest error leads to crosstalk issues.

NICs have DSPs to cancel out crosstalk.

On AliExpress I found some that were already packaged into neat little professional-looking adapter-sized widgets for about $2.50 each.

I'd link them here, but I have a US perspective on things and it wasn't clear to me how this listing would be delivered. And delivery method is important to me, here.

If with AliExpress Choice shipping, then that'd be fine: They'd show up on a doorstep in Anytown, USA for a few dollars each.

But if they'd be delivered using Approximately Any Other Method, then: Surprise! Your widget valued at less than $2.50 now costs you $80 to receive!

I don't want to encourage anyone to be surprised like that.

(I have no doubt that an enterprising person could negotiate a very good price on 1,000 of these widgets and sell them on Amazon if they were motivated to do so.)

I remember getting my first laptop with gigabit ethernet in 2005, more than 20 years ago! I'm surprised 10gbit is still so uncommon and eyewateringly expensive. And I don't just mean the adapters which are coming down in price finally but also the switches. For more than 10 years we've had semi managed gigabit switches for 25€ like the TP-SG108E. 10gbit is still crazy expensive. Even though it is quite needed these d…

10GB ethernet switches will never be cheap because of the power requirements. Just get a 25GB switch and skip 10GB all together.

Of course they will go down in power just like these USB controllers have done.

...why would you ever not run copper alongside fiber for new construction? If nothing else, PoE is extremely useful, and nothing says that you actually have to connect all of that copper cable to your switch... you can connect it as-needed. I also can't imagine that most refits only have room for exactly one cable in their conduit. [0]

I'd expect to hear the sort of plan you propose from a PHB or Highly Paid Consultant, not someone who actually has had to use that sort of configuration.

Regardless, the scenario you're now proposing is one where noone other than a PHB would use that Amazon Special that you linked for media conversion.

[0] If there's no conduit and cables are all flopping around in the wall, then there's even more room for cabling.

25GB switches do 1/10/25GB, can be used with copper and fiber, use a magnitude less in power per port than a 10GB copper switch and cost the same or less per port than existing 10GB copper switchs.

Running a new cable is easy. You just use the old cable to pull the new cable. You can run composite cable if you desire copper, fiber and power.

The original problem was that everyone runs copper instead of fibre because there are too many existing devices that only have copper. Running both everywhere would require you to buy and terminate twice as much cable as you expect to use, which leads people to running only copper again.

If you chose PCs to begin with that come with fibre ethernet or put quality cards in the ones that matter then you could make fibre the default instead of copper. Until you have a number of devices like printers or VoIP phones or Raspberry Pis that have no need for 10Gbps or even 1Gbps connectivity, they just need a way to be plugged in at all. If you need to add $100+ in conversion expense to each of those devices, you're back to using copper by default.

Running a new cable is easy. You just use the old cable to pull the new cable. You can run composite cable if you desire copper, fiber and power.

Which is why people run only copper because that costs less than running multiple types of cable everywhere when most drops only have one device, and then pull fibre through using the existing copper cable in the rare instances where they find a need for 40Gbps or more.

But then the copper gets used for 10Gbps connections instead of fibre because it's what's already in the building.
