Freenet (aka Hyphanet) is 25 years old... it's been "stable" for decades. Biggest problem is that content is sort-of hosted locally and considering how much child porn and other criminal content is in its darker corners tha can be risky. It's also incredibly slow.

Stable and yet never used in live env. It's being rewritten and not at all stable. I don't expect it to become the standard anyway.

I'm old enough to remember when there were more nodes for Freenet than Tor. I don't hink you have much experience with darknets.

This is presumably due to the action brought by OCLC against the defendant for "scraping" worldcat.org in 2022-2023

According to the certificate of service, Tucows, the registrar for the .org domain, has been made aware of the litigation

The Court has stated that "browserwrap" agreements, e.g., OCLC terms and conditions, may be unenforceable in Ohio and it's unclear whether "scraping" violates Ohio tort law. It has certified these questions to the Ohio Supreme Court, but unless the defendant responds, it looks like a default judgment will be granted

That's not true. Anna's Archive gets new paper uploads from Z-Lib and LibGen as well. It's much more up to date than SciHub.

I agree, nothing beats Nexus right now. In fact, even the AA FAQ recommends using it for recent papers. They technically include the Nexus dataset in AA, but it hasn't been updated since 2024.

If anyone hasn’t heard it, the podcast Darknet Diaries episode 92 (2021-05-11) is a great listen.

I love that show! Jack has an infectious take on all the criminal antics! He is able to, for the most part, interview them in a non judgemental way. I fine his style clear and well produced!

Very highly recommended!

Darknet term is mostly used to refer onion services, which have been around since 2004. Freenet was never meant for anonymity, both have separate goals.
